Hi,

Does the Vodafone USB Modem Stick Pro have an aerial/antenna socket?

No.

I have just been looking at THESE, but I'm not sure how well these would work seeing that there is no physical connection!

I used a home made version of one of those until I got my Huawei E156G which has a socket. It worked OK, but not as good as a direct connection.

According to http://www.sitefinder.ofcom.org.uk I only have two masts in usable range of my location, one is Vodafone and one is O2, so I am trying to find out if either offers USB modems with an aerial socket. I could use my Huawei E156G, but if I'm going to be supplied with a free new one it might as well be one I can use.

The reason I need an aerial socket is because I live on a Dutch barge which is effectively a 6mm thick steel box.

Hi Chris

Welcome to the eForum

Wow, 6mm steel, buoyancy never ceases to amaze me, Dutch Engineering as they say, you gotta love it, :)

I know exactly what you're talking about, however you'd need a specific modem, and one that we no longer produce, namely the E270 USB Modem. It's a larger rectangular shape and has no evident aerial socket, initially at least.

You'd need to peal away part of the back paper cover to reveal the socket, in most cases you can actually feel around for it and pierce a whole right through the paper on the back. I'm afraid you'll need to do a bit of searching to find this one, we don't sell it anymore via our Store either :(

It seems that none of the networks that have a tower in my area supply a modem with an antenna socket.

I think I'll go with Vodafone and first try and set it up on my Huawei E156G stick, but I think this device would limit me to 3.5mbs.

My other option would be to use the Vodafone USB Modem Stick Pro with winchymatt's suggestion http://www.solwise.co.uk/3g-datacard-to-an...rs-adpt-026.htm my home made one worked OK, so I'm guessing that a professionally made and tested one would work better.

I currently use T-Mobile Web'n'Walk which used to be OK, but over the last six months the signal strength and number of times it drops to zero has become unacceptable. T-Mobile seem unable to rectify this so I have cancelled my account. My Huawei E156G and Wilson Electronics aerial work fine as I have used friends SIM cards to test other networks (Orange & O2) and they were fine.

Well, signed up with Vodafone, put the SIM card in my Huawei E156G downloaded the VMC lite v3.2.1.156 unziped it, ran it, it updated the Huawei E156G and connected without a hitch. So I guess you can connect with any device if you are willing to experiment. Also the Standard Mobile Partner software connects and works OK if you use the APN settings provided on this eForum, and look in the connection properties of the connection that VMC lite sets up for the phone number. Armed with this info I think I could almost get two bean tins and a piece of string to work
