Using W715 As Modem For Mac Os X

hi i am using my w715 (i have contract internet) to access the internet on my mac mini (intel) under os x
if i use bluetooth between computer and mobile phone it works
if i use a cable between w715 and usb port on computer it does not work
will it be faster using a cable? if so how can i set it up - i need detailed settings please
max download speed on bluetooth is 7k/s if i am really lucky
what is the best download speed i can expect to achieve (i am in 3g area - on holiday). can i alter settings to achieve a better download speed?

Hi aaaaaa,

Bluetooth with a Mac is a very easy affair, because the computer will recognise the phone as a standard bluetooth modem.

Connecting via cable is a bit more complicated, as you'll need to find the relevant modem script specific to your phone. Since these are not supplied by the manufacturer or ourselves, you will more than likely need to do a spot of Google hunting for Mac Modem Scripts. I know that such websites exist, but because they're unofficial, I'm afraid I can't point them out to you directly.

You will get a slightly better download speed using cable, but the setup can be a chore, so it's a case of swings and roundabouts. If you're in a 3G area, the average connection speed is likely to be around 3.6Mb/s

For people who just want to use bluetooth dial-up networking with a Sony Ericsson W715 and an Apple MacBook (Mac OS X 10.5 or 10.6) you will need to setup the W715 and MacBook like this:

1) With the Sony Ericsson W715, choose "Settings" in the menu
2) In the "Connectivity" panel, choose "Bluetooth"
3) Make sure bluetooth is turned on, and that "Visibility" is set to "Show phone"
4) Also check that the "Data accounts" option is set to "Contract internet" or "PAYG internet"
5) On the MacBook, click on the Bluetooth "B" icon in the menu bar
6) On the MacBook click on "Set Up Bluetooth Device..." and look for your W715 in the device list
7) On the MacBook click "Continue" and type the number into the W715 to pair the device
😎 Click "Yes" on the W715 to allow the MacBook to use the W715 as a modem and remote control
9) IMPORTANT: On the MacBook you should see the "Bluetooth Mobile Phone Setup" screen:
9a) Don't type any information into any of the text fields
9b) Make sure the "Show Bluetooth status" check box is checked with a tick
9c) Make sure the "Show Modem status" check box is checked with a tick <--VERY IMPORTANT
10) On the MacBook, click "Continue" then finally "Quit" on the last page of the setup wizard

OK, now you're ready to rock and roll! To connect your MacBook to the internet via Dial-Up Networking (DUN) you just need to do the following:

1) On the MacBook, click on the Bluetooth "B" icon in the menu bar
2) Find your W715 device name in the menu, and in its submenu choose "Connect to Network"
3) On the W715 choose "Yes" to allow the MacBook to use the W715 as a Modem and Remote Control
4) On the MacBook, click on the telephone modem icon in the menu bar (next to the Bluetooth "B")
5) On the Macbook, click the "Connect Bluetooth DUN" option in the menu (DUN is Dial-Up Networking)
6) On the W715, again choose "Yes" to allow the MacBook to use the W715 as a Modem
7) On the W715, select "always allow" if you're given the choice whether to "ask" or "allow"
😎 On the MacBook, you should see "Connecting..." then the connection duration in seconds
9) That's it! Enjoy your dial-up networking from anywhere you can get a Vodafone signal
10) When you're finished, don't forget to click "Disconnect Bluetooth DUN" on the MacBook!

I hope this helps you to get an internet connection on your MacBook via your W715 from anywhere you travel in the world.

Could you tell me please how to set up modem sharing with my mac, as I am struggling? I too have a W715 on pay monthly. I can get the bluetooth connection working, but not the modem connection. In addition the media player options works on the phone. I have Leopard 10.5 on my macbook.

Have you had an opportunity to try out Kevin's approach as depicted above? it does well in describing the setup for a Bluetooth connection.

If you haven't already gone through this please do so and advise the specific error messages or notifications you receive upon trying to make a connection,

Hi

ALso need help especially from vodafone. I've set everything up to use blackberry 9700 as modem via bluetooth with mac according to this board and other searches.

It pairs fine and connects briefly but disconnects straight away with error: A connection could not be established to the PPP Server..

When I called Vodafone Tech Svc's they said they do not support Mac on 2 occasions!!

Also not sure whatr to put in for phone, acct name and password and tried *99#, web, web, tried internet, tried webs and tried without phone number.

ANy help greatly appreciated

The link that LastangryMan has given has all of the information you need (thanks for that ). I would advise though that when it asks for username, password and phone number you'll need to enter the following:

Username:web
Password:web
Phone number:*99#
