Vodafone Coverage - Only Get Hsupa In Hsdpa Area

SpikeyUK
Not applicable
Hi,

I have the new K4505 HSPA+ USB device and was told that my postcode W6 7PZ was in one of the best areas for reception, however I can only get the device to connect in either 3G, 3G+ or HSUPA but not HSDPA or HSPA+ (which the device supports).

Does anyone know where I can check my coverage or any tools I can use to see what is going on?

Thanks everyone,

Simon.

Isn't HSUPA (High Speed UPLINK Packet Access) an improvement over HSDPA (Downlink)? So if you are showing HSUPA you are getting HSDPA for the downlink, and HSUPA for a faster uplink. HSDPA being a given if you have HSUPA.

Not sure you will get HSPA+ anywhere as I don't know if Vodafone have implemented it yet. Evolved HSPA (also known as: HSPA Evolution, HSPA+, I-HSPA or Internet HSPA) is an upcoming wireless broadband standard defined in 3GPP release 7 and 8 of the WCDMA specification. Evolved HSPA provides data rates up to 42 Mbit/s in the downlink and 11 Mbit/s in the uplink (per 5MHz carrier) with multiple input, multiple output (MIMO) technologies and higher order modulation. Ah ok that would make sense! I checked the map and I am in an excellent area for coverage and so should get up to 7.2 but only get 2.5. What other factors do you need to get 7.2?

Also, considering vodafone network, how come their branded USB modem advertises HDPA+ running up to 21mbps if their network doesn't support it?

Thanks.

It might be that the modem supports a network of that type, even if there is not one available to which it can connect - in the same way that some BlackBerry devices offer EDGE, and state this on the box, even though Vodafone UK does not offer a full EDGE network, or a power supply sold in the UK can be 110-240v compatible, even though you'd struggle to find a 110v output.

Hey SPikeyUK,

Neil_Brown has hit the nail on the head - your modem's maximum capabilities will only be of use in certain areas, at optimum conditions.

In terms of factors that will improve your speed, proximity to the mast, the number of users sharing the same mast (governed normally by time of day, of course) and your local environment (your building's material, nearby electromagnetic interference etc..).

I trust this clears things up, but if not, let us know and we'll do everything we can to resolve things! :)
