Vodafone Mobile Broadband - Can I Connect The Dongle To A Free WiFi Network?

I can do the above with my o2 dongle but I cannot see an option to do that on this vodafone one. I can get a list of connections available but these are all network ones - my own strong signal wifi one is not listed! There is an option screen in the main setup window connected with using WLAN but I do not know what to enter in it and do I have to reset it for a new network eg today I may want to connect at home with my router, tomorrow I may want to connect to a Mcdonalds router.

Hello thesaint,

I'm sorry but I'm confused. Some say it's not hard ;)

You shouldn't need a dongle to connect to a wifi network, in fact, I never use a dongle to connect this way, I simply switch on wifi, locate the relevant connection and connect.

Is it me?? I told you I was confused.

Yes Lee, I can see why you are confused.
Let me explain a little further.
There are at least 2 reasons why iI think it can be better to use a dongle rather than the build in wifi of the laptop
1 With the o2 one (at least) you can freely use their openzone wifi system. There might be a similar system on Vodafone?
2 Sometimes when a wifi signal is weak, it can help to have the receiving aerial higher in the air. It is not usually conveinant to hoist the laptop over your head and operate it. However; if you put the dongle onto an extension USB cable, you can position it higher or hang it out of a window.
I also note that if you display the large format connection manager on screen, there is option for WLAN (at the bottom of the other items), where information may be entered to set it up - but what do you enter?

Hi thesaint

Our Mobile connect cards are just that for mobile connect, they do not have a WIFI card inside them.

The Vodafone mobile connect client offers connectivity management for your current WIFI card (usually the inbuilt one) the settings its looking for are usually the SSID of the router and the WEP key if needed.

Thanks
