Solution

WiFi R205

Hi All

I've just got one of these devices as I work on a ship and I'm away for long periods and it allows me to keep in touch with the family.

It works really well. However one massive disappointment is the fact that if you press the power button twice the unit displays the SSID and the passcode !!!!!

Needless to say, people have been helping themselves to my wifi connection.

It seems the only way to stop them doing this is to use MAC selective connection - that way only devices I authorise will be allowed to connect. However I've tried several times to add my laptop and my phone, but the software just says "loading" but nothing happens and the screen just starts back where it started.

Is this a known fault ?

I go away again on Wednesday and really want this resolved before I go so that my data doesnt get eaten up by unwelcome guests !!!

Graham

I agree with what you are saying however arguably having an encryption key on the device does in effect make it secure and as far as a salesman would understand of the device this would be sufficient.

Have you tried changing the key and then keeping the device in your pocket to stop the other guys getting hold of it?

It's a temporary fix but should help in the meantime.

My local store is closed tomorrow or I would have stopped in and tried it out.

Dave,

Not sure if you have a R205 kicking about your office but it would be good if you could get hold of one and test the functionality of it?

I have a feeling it could be a faulty device here that needs the software re-flashing onto it but it first needs to be proven that its not bug in the released software as re-flashing would then have no effect.

The ship is steel, so the only place I can get a signal is to put it in one of the ship's windows on the messdeck.

As a temporary fix I'm tempted to strip the unit and place a bit of paper over the lower part of the screen and re assemble it. That will effectively blank off the area where the code is displayed. However doing this will invalidate my warranty, so I'm not prepared to do it at this stage.

Another solution would be to turn off the SSID broadcast so I have to physically type it in when I search for the network, but not sure if that would work either.

You would only need to manually type the SSID the first time you connect, after that your devices should connect automatically.

You could put a very sticky sticker over the part of the screens display. Argueably someone could peel it off but a lot of people would start peeling realise it's making a mess and stop. This does mean you wouldn't need to pull the device apart and hence not invalidate the warranty.

I have not seen the screen — it is obvious that the second line is a password?

If not, could you change your WPA key to:

Signal_Strength:Good

or something like that, so that a casual observer would think that it's information about the device, rather than a password?

Hi watugi

Thanks for your reply. I've referred the post now to our Global Product Support team with regards to further advice on where we go from here. As soon as I receive a response I'll be on to update the thread.

Thanks

Simon

Hi watugi

Thanks for your patience whilst I've been awaiting a response. After speaking with my colleagues it appears that those using firmware version 3.8 have been able to replicate the same issue of the password showing, whereas on v4.0 this appears to have fixed the issue. Therefore, I'm inclined to believe that this is a firmware issue and we'll need to push the latest firmware to your device.

So that I'm able to forward the firmware download onto you, I've sent a private message with details of how to contact us directly. You can find your PM inbox here. If you can't access this link, please ensure that the box next to "Turn on private messages" is ticked on this page, and let us know if you need any further assistance.

Thanks

Simon

Simon, can you forward the v4.0 firmware download (or whatever is latest) to me, too.
I am on firmware v3.8 and have experienced the same issue.

thanks,
