sim messages

I recently done a factory reset on my galaxy s3 I had some messages I needed to keep so I saved them to the sim card and now I cant seem to access them any ideas please

I've never tried this, but do you need to set the default storage to SIM (temporarily) in order to access them, or is there a restore option?   If all else fails, if the messages are there, it's possible that a Vodafone shop could get at them via their Red Box.
