Advanced settings for ASUS DSL-AC55u

Hi

 

My ASUS router sync speed is pretty low compared to the VF router (however the VF router is junk that is incredibly slow and lacked required functionality).

I've spoken to VF who seem to think it's wiring related, as a network engineer of 10 years, but with no experience of VDSL, can anyone confirm that the attached settings are correct?

 

For reference, the sync speed of the vodafone router (Huawei PoS), was about 5mbps higher than this. I'm supposed to be on superfast 2. Speed tests at any time of day don't go about 30mbps (tested on 5g wireless and wired to rule out any other issues).

A couple of settings to look at.

Start with changing the VDSL mode from 30a to 17a (the profile for the correct number of tones on a standard OpenReach connection)

See where that gets you to, it may be all that you need.

 

The other setting is "Stability Adjustment", with this disabled the cabinet should make all the decisions.  If you set it to a lower value than the current SNR you may see your speeds increase.  There will come a point though where your download speed will increase to the detriment of your upload speed.

 

See where those two settings get you, if they don't help we can all maybe do a little deeper digging for you!

Hi, so I changed the profile to 17a and it would sync but not connect to the remote server. Current SNR is 5.0db so I’ve set it to 3db still on 30a multi mode.  Sync speed has improved very slightly, about 1mbps. 

Is it possible that 17a might take some time to connect the first time?

It can take a couple of minutes to sync between the cabinet and your router.  Problem is if you keep changing things it's very easy to trigger DLM which will then reduce your line speed for a whole other reason.

 

In this order...

unplug the modem+router from the wall

change the mode setting on the router to 17a and apply

turn the modem+router off, and leave it off for 30mins

plug it back into the phone socket, turn on, and leave it for up to 5 mins!

I’ve done that now, 17a and everything else the same. No improvement I’m afraid. 

im guessing there isn’t any resources that have the correct settings anywhere?

I'm no expert, but have you considered that the modem in the Asus is just not as compatible with your cabinet as the one in the Vodafone. I can't see anywhere that you say what your sync speed is but if the router is only negotiating an SNR of 5 you aren't likely to get much more speed.

What does the BT checker say you should get?

so that site shows between 50-53mbps and my max achieved is 32.9mbps. 

So, given the SNR, am I more likely looking at wiring?

Is that sync speed or download?

What sync and SNR does the Vodafone router get.

Have you tried with the routers in the test socket?

that is Sync speed. The SNR margin is flipping between about 4.3 and 6. Which I’d have thought should have been static. 

Router is connected to test socket with a micro filter.

Strangely I have just had my broadband problems resolved after 3 months and a constantly changing SNR was one of the obvious symptoms, although they were much more extreme than that. My problem was found to be on the fibre and was cured by Openreach swapping me to a different fibre port. If your interested take a look at some of my posts:

Obviously your problem may be nothing like mine, but if the sync speed using the Vodafone modem is significantly different to that on the BT checker and what you were advised when you joined Vodafone and you are connected directly to the test socket you should contact Vodafone so they can do some tests.
