Asus router. New installation tomorrow

Hi. 

I've been reading that the supplied router cannot be put into modem mode. 

So can I remove the supplied router and use my Asus AC3200? If so what are the settings I require. Or will I need to purchase a separate modem and then link that to my Asus? Reason is I have an extensive network in my house with NAS, security cameras etc.

The RT-AC3200 is a router only and has no modem, so you are going to need a modem.  For most people, this is either going to be a second hand BT branded Huawei HG612 V3b off eBay, or the Draytek Vigor 130.  There are other modems available, but they are the most common.  One to avoid is the Netgear DM200, since due to an oddity between it and anything OpenReach it'll only work in modem-router mode and not as a pure modem (UK specific and Netgear have been ignoring the issue for a couple of years).

Once you have your modem you'll need to set the "service" VLAN tag between the modem and the internet to 101, allegedly you also need to set the VLAN priority to 2, but leaving it at zero seems to work just fine!

You'll then need your vodafone internet user name in the format dsl000123456'at symbol'broadband.vodafone.co.uk and password in the format abc123 (6 digits a mix of numbers and letters).

Now, my modem is a Vigor 130, and in order to be able to see it's stats (this is an additional step, and not necessary if you don't want to see those stats) you have to set up a reverse channel on the routers WAN port.  The modem is set up (in it's own config) as 192.168.5.1, and the settings in the screenshot identify the router as being at IP address 192.168.5.10 - your data passes through all this transparently so don't worry!  Different modems work in different ways, the Huawei HG612 V3b has a control Lan port which you can connect to and have the control interface available via am address on within the router managed range!

Ah! no!

If you're getting FTTP or FTTH rahter than VDSL FTTC, then you do not need a modem!

However....  The VLAN tags are different (911 in most areas) and you have to use the IPTV capability of the router to set them as there is no option on the WAN connection page.

Thankfully I dont watch TV so the iptv will be of no use. However I will be using the phone. So theres no way i can make asus my main router as far as I know the TGH router cannot be put into modem mode. 

Btw voda badly messed up so my installation is now later in the month

You need to use the IPTV settings to insert the VLAN tags between your router and the box on the wall that it connects to.

It's called IPTV for historic reasons, and on your connection will having nothing to do with TV whatsoever!

Just to clarify, you said something about FTTP or FTTH, 

I am getting gigafast installed which is the new cityfibre internet in the area.

500mb upload and download.

I have an asus rt ac68u router at the moment to my virgin media modem only router.

I was under impression that I needed a new modem to operate as modem only mode but you said

With Gigafast the ONT/PON that is installed is the equivalent of a modem on an analogue phone line, so you do not need to buy anything to fit between the ONT/PON and the router.
