Broadband not impressed

Hi all.

I had full fibre 900 installed 2 weeks ago which uses the CityFibre line. I used to have Sky fibre 500 which was installed by Openreach (BT).

With the Sky fibre I had no issues of any kind, download speeds used to regularly hit 450Mbps through the Xbox.

But now with the Vodaphone 900 fibre it just never seems to work right. Wifi drops out quite a lot and I have my TV and Xbox connect using cables (I've tried CAT5e and CAT6 cables) and they don't connect at all. If I unplug the cable and plug it back in, then I get a connection, so the connection is there is just doesn't connect. It does this EVERY time? Never had these hassles with Sky. The download speeds are also very disappointing, only ever reaches a max of around 350Mbps. I went for the 900 line for faster downloads but it's slower than the Sky 500.

Outside they have also left slabs sticking up, trunking exposed and a big line across my grass, very poor standard of installation. Strongly considering cancelling it as I'm within the 14 days cooling off period.

If we could sort the speed issue would you consider staying?

How are you testing the speed? If not already use a pc connected via lan to the router with everything else disconnected. WiFi is it's own bottleneck. If you're already bothered about the mess the installers have left then cancelling won't change that.

If you are still considering leaving do it sooner rather than later.

if the speed and issues were sorted then yes, I would consider staying.

The poor state of the installation WILL be addressed, I can assure you of that.

I am a former BT engineer, if I had left an installation like that I would have been hauled over the coals!

Agreed.

Have you tried the speed test as I suggested. I recommend first a test to Vodafone's own ookla speedtest server available at https://www.vodafone.co.uk/broadband/speed-test then a second test at https://www.speedtest.net/

Together they should help identify where the network is struggling.

Also could you post the gateway IP listed in the status page of the router. If you're not sure about going into the router's admin pages you could run a traceroute to bbc.com - don't worry about this revealing any private information.

On these forums it's a lot quicker to paste links to results or copy/paste text info, as images take an age to be moderated.

OK. Vodaphone's own speed test shows 997.1 download and 940.7 upload through a wired connection.

I went onto the second test and it shows ( wired connection) upload speed of 940.93 and download speed of 499.45?

Still doesn't explain why when I first turn on my TV or Xbox there is no connection, but if I unplug the network cable at either end then plug it back in, the connection appears?

.@RobDon a quick search finds 59 threads mentioning Xbox. A quick look (I'm not going through all of them) reveals;

Change DNS to 8.8.8.8, see https://forum.vodafone.co.uk/t5/Other-broadband-queries/Xbox-live-connection/m-p/2662678

This one is a long read (320 replies) but may be worth a look as there is an answer on page 16, see https://forum.vodafone.co.uk/t5/Broadband-connection/Xbox-Series-X-wired-connection-issue/td-p/27051...

I'll take a look, thank you.

So it looks like I need to buy a Gigabit network switch or even my own router to get things working properly.

From all of the input it seems like the Vodaphone router is the problem and they don't seem to care that it doesn't work properly?

.@RobDon fortunately unmanaged switches are quite cheap. If you do know somone who has one then try-before-you-buy is always an idea. Depending on brand they start from about £9 plus P&P.

yes I agree, £9 to fix the issue is not a big deal. Vodaphone should be supplying a working router though.

How do you access the Vodaphone router settings? I never got a password or anything when it was installed?
