Internet continually dropping - no IPv4 address

This weekend my Internet cut out completely. I logged in to the router and found 'no IPv4 address'. Phoned Vodafone, and the Internet came back on after being instructed to turn off the Openreach-installed socket and the router for 2 mins (and then reconnect).

Internet has been fine for 4 days since. Then today, the same thing's happened again. Cut out. No IPv4 address. I did the same thing I did 4 days ago, and the Internet worked again. Then, an hour later, cut out, no IPv4 address.

What's going on here, and how do I get this solved? I'm WFH and this is affecting my capacity to do my job.

Thanks,

Thank you for the detailed reply. It's very much appreciated.

I called Vodafone, and quoted you, and they've sent another firmware update. Waiting to see whether this helps to solve things.

Unsure whether this comment will get seen, but after a new firmware update was sent on Saturday, the connections been lost again - with no IPv4 again.

Starting to wonder whether the first comment re the set speed profile being too fast could be an issue?

Thanks,

Definately not, there are no line profiles on FTTP only on FTTC, the comment was written without realising you were on full fibre.

@Roverst88 Try with IPv6 turned off in the router.

Hi, this was one of the first things I tried, actually.

The connections been dropping (no IPv4 etc) with all IPv6 settings turned off.

Sounds super frustrating, especially when you're working from home. Since rebooting fixes it temporarily, it could be a DHCP issue, a problem with your line, or even the Openreach socket. I’d reach out to Vodafone again and push for a proper line check or maybe a new router. If it keeps happening, an engineer visit might be the way to go. Hope they sort it quickly!

DHCP is unlikely, but that can be altered on the router. There isn't an OR Socket on FTTP, but there is an ONT but that has no impact on the problem if rebooting the router is a fix. If all the ONT lights are correct, see the ONT use manual for details, then there's nothing wrong with the ONT and the line.

@Raxaq @Cynric

Yeah, I have LAN, PON and power lights on the ONT, with connections secured.

Turning off power to both ONT and router and powering back on is how I can reconnect. If I power down the router only, the line is still disconnected after rebooting.

Firmware has been redownloaded, so would likelihood of the issue be 1) faulty router, or 2) Openreach issue with connection?

Are there other options here?

Yeah, it's a bummer. Drops once a day, sometimes several, and then I'll have two or three days solid connection before it drops again. Weird.

Cheers,

Only thing I would add is that the LAN light on the ONT is flickering fairly consistently. Unsure how usual that is, since the Openreach engineers didn't leave the manual with me and must have chucked it.

The flickering LAN LED just indicates traffic.

  • Off: No LAN connection
  • On and steady: LAN connected with no traffic
  • Flickering: LAN connected with traffic
