Solution

Ongoing issues with website failures over the last couple of weeks.

I have Superfast 2 Broadband, out of contract as it happens...

Recently, say the last 10 days or so I am getting repeated failures on my home network.

I used to run my own DNS server, DHCP and advert  blocking on a pihole running unbound.

Suddenly, I couldn't get websites to load, my XBOX One to update or my OSMC Vero 4K to connect for updates.

I took out the pihole.
I reset my Vodafone router.
I did a full system reset on my XBOX, with an offline system update. Failed to be able to add a connection.
In desperation, after advice from Microsoft I took my XBOX to my mother's house, much to her 88 year old confusion. Flawless reset and account addition.

For the Vero 4K I used a separate dev build.

Something has happened to my broadband connection.
I have a VPN from Proton using that, suddenly d/l speed drops to zero.
Oh, I uninstalled and reinstalled the client.

I'm unsure what Vodafone has done, but it is something, and I'd like it fixed. I can always take my phone line, broadband connection and  contract mobile SIMs elsewhere if I have to.
I'd rather not.

Thanks, Jayach.

I told my wife this morning that I suspected I was going to have to talk to VF to get them to change the router, and if they wouldn't I'd have to move ISP.

Oddly enough...

Guess what happened this afternoon. After 2 weeks. Sites started resolving, I could d/l debian.
Must have been some odd transient, but at least I don't have to move ISP just yet!

Let's hope it doesn't come back. 😀

It was a strange one!

I too have been having problems trying to update Raspberry Pi over the last few days. Starts ok, but then fails when it tries to access the Debian repositories. This morning, my iPhone won’t update - says Its not connected to the internet. But it is.

Temporary solution in both cases has been to use a phone on the Three network as a hotspot. Not ideal at all.

My router is using Open DNS rather than Vodafone’s DNS servers.

Could you please tell me where to find the menu for changing the DNS?

It is not in my account settings.  Is it in the router?

Hi, @beresford2. The DNS settings are on your router under Internet. You’ll need to be using expert mode.

Hope this helps.

As @MarkWeinreb says you can find them here:

Thanks for the details.  I have changed the DNS to non-Vodafone.

The slow running, losing some sites altogether, and email not accessible problems were fixed when I unplugged the router for 5 minutes, and it restarted with the latest software.  I had forgotten the first rule of computers - if it doesn't work, power off and reboot.
