Throttling of VPN traffic ?

Hi,

In the last couple of weeks I have noticed that my speeds have dropped completely via VPN connections.  Not only have speeds plummeted, connections are also very flaky.

I've run some tests today and if I disable OpenVPN on my router, speed tests return 50mbps+, but the moment I enable VPN - I've tried two different providers, speeds drop to between 5 and 8.

Has anyone else seen this?

Using a VPN is almost always going to mean that your data takes a different route, and it's outside the control of our ISP Vodafone.  So once you start doing this the route changes and there may be other bottlenecks - including the ability of your router to handle the data transformations required by OpenVPN.

I've used several VPNs and depending on what I'm connecting to speeds can increase or they can decrease.  *If you have an old router then the amount of OpenVPN data it can be handle can be very minimal!
