Vodafone are liars

Recently we upgraded our package from 200mb to 500mb. Whilst we were getting 200mb for a year we did not experience any speed issues and were constantly getting 212-217mb of speed.

Then last week we called to see if we can renew our contract and Vodafone said that our contract is not up for renewal till next year then I asked are we eligible for a package upgrade and the woman on the phone said we can give you 500mb of speed for the same price which sounded fantastic then went for the offer.

Then today on the first day of my upgraded package I went on speedtest.net and only getting 250mb which is half of the speed. I called Vodafone and they said that’s it the minimum speed that you are getting and there is nothing wrong with your internet speed and 500 is the maximum speed you are supposed to be getting. I then said so if the package that you’ve opted in for is the minimum then why was I constantly getting 212-217mb of speed then they said I don’t know.

Think Vodafone doesn’t comply with ofcom regulations and will be looking to move to a different isp.

How are you testing? Wifi is a bottleneck and will mess up speedtest results. As you use speedtest.net is the server that's first offered close to you?

I am using the speedtest.net app on my iPhone. Tbh regardless of which ISP’s I have used in the past. I have not had such a large speed discrepancies in the past and we are on city fibres FTTP network which was known to be far better than BT Openreaches or virgin media’s line.

@vhira1985 Which iPhone model are you testing over WiFi with?

250Mb would be about right over WiFi. It would be the same if you had a 1Gb connection, your phone on wifi has zero chance of saturating your connection. That's wifi for you.

The only way to get better wifi speed is with a better router, but even then it's not guaranteed.

I know but my argument is that why haven’t I had this issue with the 200mb package that I was on previously with Vodafone and with sky and virgin media? I am not saying that 500mb is the speed that I only should be getting all the time. But today on the first day of my package upgrade I have been doing speed tests constantly and my download and upload speeds have not been close enough to 500mb but only 250 to 290 and I have been speed testing from morning to evening.

But you're testing over a wifi connection that won't do more than that 250-290Mbit with that router. It's a fixed number, not a percentage. 200Mbit was fine because it's less than this physical limit. Test from a cabled pc/laptop.

So should Vodafone supply me with a better router to get better WiFi so I can get the 500mb speed? I am using the old black one (Vodafone THG3000) so not sure if that router is the cause of me not getting 500mb of speed.

It is. I stopped using my THG3000 years ago and haven't looked back. It's wifi5, well behind the times (11yr old tech).

I have spoken to 3 Vodafone customer advisors from India who were rude and kept on talking over me. But the 4th customer advisor from Egypt was on the phone with me for over an hour and tried his upmost best. He thinks my WiFi router is not good and working in a loop. He said he will send a new one which will be the white one… Not sure which one is that one but I hope that will offer much faster speeds.

But the 4th customer advisor from Egypt was fantastic btw.
