Free change of number

Someone used my landline and I started getting automated calls up to 5 times a day asking for a man who I've never heard of. In the end I unplugged the phone and haven't used it for 3 years. Yesterday I asked Vodafone to change my number so I can start using my landline but they want to charge me £45. Surely that's not right. I've been a customer for about 20 years and don't feel taken care of at all.

I've no idea why they would want to charge for issuing you a new number.

However, are you aware that traditional home phone connections are being phased out, and no new connections to the PSTN (Public switched telephone network) are allowed?

Having not used the home phone for so long, why are you wanting to start again? Lots of people now prefer to use mobile only.
