Landline phone with own router on FTTP

Just got FTTP and everything is working fine off the VF router. Phone lines are plugged into the VF router, VF router's WiFi is switched off. 3rd party Mesh has been switched to Bridge mode and plugged into the VF's ethernet port.

However I am shocked at how feature poor the VF router is. e.g. There are no Parental controls at all. I know I can get rid of the VF router and plug my own Mesh router into the Openreach ONT, but what about the Landline.

Are there any 3rd party routers in the market that have a telephone socket at the back to allow the home phone to be plugged in?

Indeed, it might be feasible if a bespoke template tailored for Vodafone were developed. I'm aware of an individual who successfully established a connection using Asterisk as a bridge between Vodafone and 3CX. Whilst this isn't the ideal solution I had in mind, it demonstrates the potential for compatibility. It would be immensely beneficial if they collaborated to create a seamlessly integrated platform that functions straight out of the box

If one is going to employ asterisk there's no need for a third party service

You're not wrong there. However, my earlier mention of Asterisk was to illustrate that there is a demand for integrating Vodafone's Digital Voice service with platforms like 3CX, even if it currently requires workarounds. My aim is to advocate for a more straightforward, user-friendly solution. By encouraging collaboration between Vodafone and 3CX, we can potentially have a seamless integration that would benefit both residential and business users. Such a partnership could lead to the development of a dedicated package or template that is specifically designed for Vodafone's Digital Voice, eliminating the need for complex setups like the one involving Asterisk. This would not only improve accessibility but also enhance the overall user experience, catering to those who may not have the technical know-how or desire to implement such workarounds.

In essence, 3CX offers a platform that, if developed in conjunction with Vodafone, could allow us to use a Vodafone SIP trunk as a residential customer. I'm not under the illusion that this will happen immediately, but these are early days. In my local area, we've only just transitioned from traditional landlines to VoIP. As more people are compelled to make the switch and start using their own routers, I anticipate an increase in potential customers exploring cloud-based VoIP services, particularly given that 3CX offers a FREE platform.

Hi,   Many thanks for your detailed posting.  This is EXACTLY what I have been looking for, as I got my Grandstream HT801 before Christmas and still have not resolved how to get it working!

Have you any tips on how to force and update to the firmware?  I have downloaded the file from the Grandstream website, but cannot find any guidance.   My firmware is significantly older (unit delivered November) and so some of the screens are different.

On my firmware under advanced settings there is "Upload Firmware: Upload from local directory"

However, I did it a different way anyway as below, which should download the file ht801fw.bin

Firmware Upgrade via HTTPS
Firmware Server Path: ce.uk/gs
Firmware Field Prefix: ht801

Thanks again.     Things looking much more promising, and I have now managed to copy in the configuration details but with my SIP account/Password.  Unfortunately the phone is still reported as 'Not registered'.   Do you have any suggestions?

BTW, I have a static IP address, as I was advised that this MAY help things.  I have tried entering it direct in the appropriate box, but still no joy.

Beginning to lose the will to live!   I have managed to configure the HT801 with a fixed IP address (checked with attached telephone) but trying to login to that same IP address is now timing out!

Sadly the Grandstream HT801 seems to be about as user friendly as a rabid dog!.   It looks like a factory reset, so back to square 1.

The device might benefit from a restart; I've frequently encountered similar issues with another Grandstream device.

I've updated the guide with arrows for clarity. Although it's set up for a dynamic IP with the use of STUN, you can still follow the same steps for your needs. Alternatively, you can just enter your static IP under - FXS Port > Use NAT IP.

In vodafone's ultimate wisdom a lot of the configuration has been locked away from us. By doing this they figure there's less chance of the end user messing things up and requiring assistance. Yeah right, look at the mess.

There's no way they will collaborate with anyone else. They would have to expose so many security features (protected by law) that their system would be exposed to a lot more potential bad actors.

In short - that'll never happen.

It's the vodafone way.

It was a quite a lot of reading involved but I finally managed to get my HT812 set up after switching to FTTP. Thank you all so much.  It would be useful to have settings screenshots for each Grandstream models in separated threads or something so we don't have to read through 53 pages of post (according to the time of posting this). Although, reading through the posts does make me appreciate all the hard work you guys went through to set this up.

I barely know all the technical jargons in the Grandstream device settings but is there a setting to increase the ring time on the phone? Its just to allow more time for slow-paced family members to pick up the phone. 😅
