I'm looking to make a longer cable with an rj11 at both ends ...to connect a landline to Tel1 on the router.
The supplied adapter appears to use: rj11( 6P4C ) .
Is there anything special about Tel1 or just a standard rj11( 6P4C ) required ?
I tried making an rj11 cable using rj11( 6P6C ) at both ends, but it didnt work,

Are you on FTTP or FTTC?
There is nothing special about the RJ11 TEL sockets, they are just 2 wires, using the centre 2 pins. So and as long as any extension cable has both those pins connected it should work.
The adapter (AFAIK) has a ring capacitor, so without it some phones may not ring, but most phones no longer require it.

Is the PHONE led lit on the router and have you had a phone working in the TEL1 socket?

Yes, the landline in question is currently working via the supplied adaptor.

I'm on FTTP.
I only used 2 wires via pins 3 and 4 on the 6P6C.
When I shine a torch into the BT end of the adaptor, I can see the cable sheath and protruding core wires, doesn't look like there is a capacitor and the landline is working and ringing without it. However, there are 4 wires in the adaptor which uses a rj11( 6P4C. ).
So I'm thinking either a 6P6C wont work and a 6P4C is required or the cable I used is damaged or the rj11 didn't crimp properly?

That should work. You should be able to use a DSL cable (in fact Vodafone suggested you should, before they started supplying the adapter) See ! below

I found my old cable tester. The cable I made is dead so that explains why it doesn't work.
Here is where it gets weird!
The supplied "internet"/dsl cable show pin connections:
3-->4
4-->3
Two other brand new rj11 cables show pin connections:
3-->3
4-->4
---
Yet, all 3 work when connecting the landline directly to the router.

Long ago forr a standard telephone connection the polarity used to matter for the 'bell', but these days no, it makes no nevermind. It's the same with DSL routers.

Yes.
If you have telephone extensions, you can wire them into the TEL socket.
If you are on FTTP, disconnect the incoming line.
If on FTTC, just remove the extension wiring from the master socket.
