With Marshmallow starting to roll out, Google Now On Tap is becoming available. The idea of this is that it’ll produced context-related information in any app. You long-press the home key (it’s no longer an upwards swipe) to access it and it claims that it’ll work out what you might want even in a SMS exchange. In order to use it, you need to have web and activity turned on. If you don’t want that, GNOT’s not available. The first time you to the long-press, you’ll get the option to choose. If you don’t, and opt out, future long-pressing produces the old Google app layout. One thing, though. You may find your location history and Google Photos sync turned off as well as web & app activity. If you want those two, you’ll need to turn them back on.
Also, if your device manufacturer had a proprietary backup option that’s now been disabled, backup to Google isn’t restored by default. You’ll need to set that up as well.
