They may have got the wording mixed up when saying Sim Free @Lynmeredith
Vodafone UK provide sim unlocked phone's so any network sim can be inserted.
Vodafone phones can be purchased on Pay As You Go terms too.
Some Vodafone Pay Monthly Plans allow a phone to be upgraded every year.
And some people take out a ²nd line.
Obviously we don't know what your friend has taken out with Vodafone.
You could offer them a lump sum amount just to buy the phone. Get something in writing in that you have bought the phone outright as a private purchase. Don't pay cash. Use bank transfer so you can prove the sale via that method.
I personally wouldn't tie myself up for ³ years for the phone.
Nor would I agree to take over the contract unofficially or officially via you your friend and Vodafone.
Or pass on the offer and aquire a phone your way.
If i can be of any further help please don't hesitate to ask 😎
