I watched a YouTube video the other day which recapped how many of Negan's gang had been killed by Rick and co. It was something like 47 or so. Negan let them off light all things considered though probably needs to recoup his numbers!
Various outlets have called out TWD for the violence in that episode. I think it's more down to the connection people have with the characters rather than the violence itself. There was a very similar scene in American Horror Story the other week which didn't get any backlash.
To be honest I was getting a little tired of TWD but having an antagonist like Negan in there will freshen it up again (something I'd say it's lacked since the Governor character from a few years ago).
