I am trying to download an app from Google play store for the first time and I am being told that i do not have a device connected

Help!!

I used this lthe stock supplied app when first using a Nokia Lumia 520

It isn't google play which is for Android phones.

Which Nokia are you using. Is it a windows operating system phone.

If google play doesn't work with Nokia how do i download apps?

From the already installed installer on the phone.

Or

Open Windows Phone Store
Press the Windows Phone Store icon.
Find app
To search by category:
Press the required category.
To search by name:
Press the search icon.
Key in the name of the required app and press arrow right.
Install app
Press the required app.
To install a free app:
Press install.
To buy an app:
Press buy.
Follow the instructions on the display to install the app.
Press the Home key to return to the home screen.
Use app
Slide your finger left on the display.
To see the list of games:
Press Games.
Press the app you've just installed.
Follow the instructions on the display to use the app.

Absolutely brilliant and yet so obvious. Makes you wonder why nokia didn't tell this

It took me 3 days trying to install from google play

To be clear with a nokia you are not intalling any apps from google play

you are installing from the windows phone store

Google play is only available to devices running the android operating system 

your nokia 635 runs on the completely different windows phone operating system and is incompatable with google android apps

you will probably find that there are several apps that are standard on android or apples ios operating system that simply do not exist in the windows phone enviroment as the developers have chosen not to code them
