Asus Tuff AX5400 Router with Vodafone Superfast Broadband

Hi please can anyone advise on the following?

I posted a while ago and have tried various methods but I must be missing something?

I have Vodafone superfast broadband (THG3000) and I want to connect with my Asus TUF AX5400 router.

I was advised by VodaFone that the superfast THG3000 router does not allow modem only access.
Therefore following advice I unlocked an Echolife HG612 and disabled TR-069 in the modem GUI (However Still no joy after connecting to the THG3000)

I then purchased what i thought was an unlocked MT992 modem off Ebay however it's not unlocked therefore i am unable to access the WEBUI to turn off the TR-069!!
However I have connected my Asus Tuff to the purchased MT992 on a friends Talk Talk network and strangely it worked seamlessly. All i had to do was configure via the ASUS router phone app and was confgured straight away without having to change anything in the router/modem settings.

I was advised on another forum that the THG3000 does not accept optical natively (don't quite understand what that means but take that as meaning it will not work with a 3rd party modem?)
I was also advised that I should just be able to "connect the new fw/router/switch/accesspoint ‘box’ to the ont" and use the credentials supplied from Vodafone. (not sure how to do this?)

If anyone thinks i'm missing a trick here i would appreciate any advice?

Simplified explanations would be welcome as not an expert with networking :Smiling:

Many Thanks,
Mike

.@mpstevens Excuse me if I am misunderstanding, it could easily be me being daft.

1. Did you want to replace the THG3000 with the AX5400?

2. Before I stopped using the THG3000 I used to have a 2nd router (Netgear) plugged from its WAN socket into the THG3000 LAN socket, and the THG3000 connected to the outside world. I turned off WiFi, DHCP and DNS in the THG3000 and used the Netgear for all that stuff and it saved me having to alter any device on the LAN. One caveat, the THG3000 firmware may have changed since then and the capability to alter settings may now be different.

Hi Yes,

Preference would have been to connect the Asus Tuf AX5400 to the Vodafone THG300O however after setting up via the ASUS app I was able to go so far and establish a connection to the Asus TUF on the network however "no internet" when accessing the web browser.
Hence why I went down the line of looking to replace the THG3000 with a modem and connect the TUF this way which so far has also been unsuccessful !!

.@mpstevens It may be as simple as the Asus having either the wrong IP address or one already in use. The THG3000 defaults to 192.168.1.1 and issues (DHCP) addresses in the range 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.254 (if I remember correctly). It is likely that the Asus is also on 192.168.1.1 and thereby causing a conflict.

You need the Asus to show 192.168.1.x towards the THG3000, and make the Asus LAN address 192.168.0.1 and issue addresses (DHCP) on its LAN towards your devices in the range 192.168.0.2 to 192.168.0.252.

You said you are on Superfast, but later you mentioned an ONT, are you on FTTC or FTTP?

Either way you will not get anything working until you have your PPPoE credentials from Vodafone. Do you have those? (I suspect it worked on TalkTalk as I believe they use DHCP not PPPoE)

If you are on FTTC, you'd connect your modem to the phone socket.  On FTTP, with an ONT there is no need for a modem!

Assuming you are on FTTC/VDSL if you plug the modem into the phone socket and then run a plug from the WAN port of the THG3000 to a port on either of the modems you've bought, it will probably work!  If it does then it'll also work with your TUF AX5400 provided you have the correct details.

*Even when unlocked it can be a pain getting into the Web UI of the HHG612 (v3b I presume) and the MT992 would undoubtedly have required to have had its firmware flashed.

**From memory the IP range of the TUF AX5400 is 192.168.50.x but with a WAN connection type of automatic IP it should work double NATted into the VF router.  Everybody's mileage on double NAT differs!

That is the important thing.
