Extending wifi range

We can only receive wifi in the rooms close to the router, we have been told to use additional routers,  wifi extenders and powerline extenders so I'm now completely  confused.

we have 3 storeys up and same wide so would need 2 of whatever is needed.

Has anyone got any experience of this and advice on which of the 3 to choose please.

Hey @madmumof5

Powerline adapters are great, they plug into your mains power sockets, and basically create a network over your electrical mains circuit. One drawback is there prone to interference from devices plugged into other sockets. I have a couple of fish tanks at home and the pumps I use cause a bit of interference on mine.

They’re pretty inexpensive though, and It would be an idea to get a couple of these to try them out.

Wi-Fi extenders are also great;. You just need to install them where the signal is starting to drop off they will then send out another Wi-Fi signal which can reach further. There are basic ones and slightly techier ones which create a mesh network in your home.

Using another router is an option too, it would be best to run an Ethernet cable from our router to the other one. You can then use the other router in the same way. The drawback is the Ethernet cable running through your house.

@Jayach Are you meaning splitting the SSID or changing channels? You should still be able to change channels through the GUI.

@Adam I mean changing channel, it's still possible to split the WiFi. By GUI do you mean the app?

If you have some way of changing the channels either through the router interface or the current version of the app I. and many others, would like to hear it.

Thank you for your helpful post. Same problem here, I'm afraid. I'm beginning to understand why BT's current ad majors on coverage in every room. Vodafone has authorised me to buy an extender or booster. My first purchase (China) hasn't worked. Would you please share what booster/extender devices you have installed? Thank you, Michael

I have exactly the same problem. If you are in the same room as the router the speed is fantastic but it drops really badly in other rooms. Didn't had this issue with Sky router. When you raise this with VF Customer service they just check the speed of the line till the router. Wifi performance of the router is not their issue. Most of the devices are connected thru wifi. Recently they have also taken out option to choose channels for 2g and 5g from their routers. It selects them automatically based on the best channel available. But I can clearly see they are not the best channels when I use other wifi channel software's. No use of having Gigafast 500 mbps connection when I only get 20-30 mbps in the next room as router. Going to invest in some good wifi mesh.

Hi there,  I am stuck with Vodafone too unfortunately and also found their customer service poor, I asked them for a WiFi booster due to the poor signal upstairs only to be told that I need to be a super fast pro customer to get one from them!  Can you please let me know what WiFi extender you have got, I want to be sure that I purchase one that actually works with vodafone.  Thank you

Hi

I tried two different well reviewed boosters but they just didn’t work for me. This wasn’t V’s fault but it was a hard road and it became v frustrating. Vodafone were pretty decent throughout and in the end we agreed to part company without penalty. Good luck.

hi I ditched the Vodafone router as it was useless and added a Netgear router. Basically just use the Vodafone router as a modem and use a device like the picture to do the WiFi. You can get loads of these so shop about More brands do it.

I can’t wait to get out of this contract - absolutely disgusting customer care and a terrible product.

I shan’t be renewing with them as they know their Router is crap, and they know we know their Router is crap - but yet bring out another product costing more to fix their inherit crap router!

The Vodafone router is definitely one of the best on the market, offering fast 160mhz channels. It will give you 900mb/s out of the box. It is WiFi6 AX which means newer devices can take advantage of the faster speeds and benefit from the better battery life that AX offers.

Unfortunately; if you have a large property, no router is going to give you full coverage throughout. This is because the maximum WiFi power levels a router can broadcast at are restricted.

I was told that Vodafone do offer free range extenders so you should call up customer services.

If you want a 3rd party mesh solution, the Asus AX92u is the best option. However, it requires technical knowledge to setup 160mhz channels and backhaul sharing. In it's default mode, it will only offer 500mbps. If you can live with that, go for 500mb gigafast package. If you know how to setup backhaul sharing and 160mhz channels, the mesh can be setup to give you 900mb/s.

@purrbox I don't believe the specs you've posted are correct unless Vodafone has a newer router than the THG3000!

What router are you referring to? As @KeithAlger says it's definitely not the THG3000.
