I use SMARTY, but they don't provide anything except whatever my AOSP-derived OS classifies as 3G (rather non-specific, considering the myriad implementations https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3G#Overview lists) where I live. Consequently, I want to try some other providers, notably Vodafone, but see no way to merely evaluate my ability to connect without paying.

You can't order a trial SIM, you won't get free access to the network @RokeJulianLockh to check the network at your location follow this link: Network Status Checker .
You can order free SIM here: Free SIM just top up the minimal amount.

That states that I've 4G exactly like the other coverage checker, but I can't consider it more reliable than its counterparts' without good reason. Regardless, the 4G layer doesn't overlay red, whereas the 2G option does — what does its absence indicate?

I didn't need to top-up in order the SIM, so it is actually free. Thanks!
