Will a "bought at supermarket" PAYG sim work in a WIFI hotspot?

I have a tplink unlocked portable wifi hotspot (4G LTE compatible).  Will this work with a generic vodafone PAYG SIM card bought from a supermarket?  I have no intention of the sim going into a phone (ever), the sim will be topped up from the internet and just used as a basic PAYG data for occasional use, I doubt I will be using enough data to justify a "bundle".

There is no reason for the SIM not working in your portable WiFi hotspot.  The problem you are going to find is running out of data and the extra charges. Using the SIM in a device as a WiFi hotspot is going to use a large chunk of data and PAYG 1 data is capped at 500mb daily and you may well find you will need to purchase an  additional 500mb data at £1.00.
