My phone contract has ended so I am able to switch to a SIM only contract for 12 months. If I do this am I able to cancel anytime before that 12 months or will I have to pay a cancellation fee?

Vodafone would have sent a text when you were in the last month of contract to let you know all your options @yngi
If you are on an Evo contract and paid off the device part of the contract, the airtime contract will end but continue on a month to month roll over 30 day SIM only until you make any changes.
There is further information here: Evo
The SIM only contracts look quite expensive at the moment, a further option will be PAYG and you will get roll over data. Take a look at Voxi still Vodafone here: Voxi

I think you'd be best off continuing as @AnnS suggests as you'll be on a 30-day contract, which effectively means you can cancel at any time. I had a look at SIM-only deals which are (unsurprisingly) best at 24 months - scroll down a bit and you'll find 200gb for £23. New 30-day deals are very expensive (the basic 1gb is £24, compared to £11 on 24 months or £12 on 12 months).
This doesn't help you now, but it's worth mentioning that there are often good offers in early January (I've just "upgraded" to 5gb for the price of 1).
Edited to add: in answer to your question - no, you can't cancel a time-defined conatract with no fee.

If you are on a plan that included a handset and not a loan (evo) then no, you are not better off just leaving it and need to move to a different plan that suits. What is your current plan?
