For most pay monthly contracts, roaming in South Africa incurs a £6 per day charge (great and you know what to expect if you're a heavy phone user, not so great if you're wanting light use / bit of data). There are a few exceptions to this as some of the more premium options include Roam Further which includes South Africa amongst the countries you can get free roaming in.

Anyway... back to your question.

If the above doesn't sound that great to you, you also could consider another couple of options.

  • Purchase a Vodafone PAYT SIM card (divert your incoming calls from your regular number to your temp PAYT number)
  • Buy a roaming extra on PAYT. These include South Africa and you can get 4GB of data as well as a calls and text allowance for £25 that lasts 15 days. There is a cheaper one for 2GB of data that lasts only 8 days

Or you could...

Check out Airilo (google them). They're an eSim only provider  (so all dependant on whether your device is compatible) who offer solutions in various countries around the world. I've just bought a plan for my niece as well as a couple of eSims for my parents iPads as they're all off to South Africa in Feb.

I was late to the party to Airilo so I'd also bought Vodacom (South Africa) prepaid sims first so my parents with have a local number in their phones.

Only reason I'm bombarding you with options is so you know the various ways to get you what you need. It's more working out which solution works best for you.
