Delayed Activation

I have moved to Vodafone from O2 with an activation date of Monday (17th) agreed. O2 did their bit, but Vodafone failed to activate it at their end. Two days with no mobile network and eventually got through to someone, afteer having to submit a complaint, who could said they could actually deal with it yesterday afternoon, who said there was an error at Vodafone's end but this was sorted and activation would now follow. We're now 24 hours from that conversation and no activation. They did say allow up to 48 hours, but I am concerned that it not having been done in 24 is a bad sign and I am just sat waiting for it not to happen in the next 24 hours and lose another day without any mobile phone capacity. Does it often take up to 48 hours? and is there a way to check it isn't just going to fail again and I've lost another day?
