SIM for GSM Intercom / Automated Gate

I have a GSM intercom / automated gate, currently with a Vodafone PAYG SIM.  The intercom uses the mobile network to connect callers to my landline or my mobile phone and the gate is controlled by receiving and sending text messages.

Because the SIM is in the intercom and not in a phone, it's impossible to easily check the balance or otherwise manage the SIM.  I would prefer a pay monthly contract but I only need text and calls and I don't want to pay for stuff I don't need (data, international roaming, G5 etc).

I can't see anything suitable on line and I can't get to a Vodafone shop to enquire.  Does Vodafone have a low cost SIM deal for such situations?  I can get one from another supplier without data for around £5 - £6 per month but I would prefer to stay with Vodafone if I can.

Thanks for any help!

Hi @MS_Boffin

All SIM's come with an inclusive call, texts and data allowance.

The cheapest you are going to get will be keeping to PAYG with an unlimited texts allowance, this will take care of all your SMS needs for your automated gate entry here: Vodafone PAYG

If you are going to get a new SIM before inserting it in the Intercom put the SIM in an unlocked phone to activate register and log on to your online account and add an alternative contact number to receive the security code this can also be a landline number and will make it easier to top up and manage the number.

Thanks for your reply.

The PAYG SIM is already in the intercom.  If I take it out and put it into an unlocked phone can I add the PAYG number to the Vodafone account I already have for my pay monthly contract so that I can manage both numbers from one account?

Is there an on-line guide to help with your suggestion:

.....  put the SIM in an unlocked phone to activate register and log on to your online account and add an alternative contact number to receive the security code......

I've never used a PAYG phone before so activating, registering and security code are all new to me.

Hi @MS_Boffin

Unless things have changed, the PAYG number will need it's own online account, this would also need alternative log in information to the pay monthly account.

When you remove the PAYG SIM from the Intercom and have the account set up, register an alternative contact number to receive the security code, this will make it a lot easier for topping up, finding balance etc.
