Setting up 4g calling ready for next year.

Hi

i have received a text saying 3g calling will end next year. I entered my IEMI number into the check box & it says that my Sony Xperia X Compact is compatible with 4g calling so i contacted a Vodafone worker via Facebook messenger & he sent me a few texts & to text CALLING to 97888. I did this & it said WiFi calling is added but nothing about 4g calling..

How can i make sure that my phone has 4g calling ? or is the WiFi calling & 4g calling the same?

Regards

@AnnS

Hiya, it's just the principal of sending messages saying you need to upgrade as opposed to 'upgrade if you want to'

It's scary for certain people who have phones that use 3g for calls and texts yet have 2g (GSM) so they don't need to upgrade but feared into doing it without the option. Not good

Hi all

So it's the eve of 3g turning off, am still wondering what will happen tomorrow or the day that I'd be using 2g for calls and texts, I hear there is no difference to 3g.

Apparently turning off starts in certain parts of the country first, not sure when it will come to Yorkshire and will all be done by September..

Thanks for your help

Also ofcom is telling people to upgrade when 3g ends as 2g isn't set up for data but surely data isn't used for calls and texts. They maybe mean for people with just 3g and 2g phones. If you got 4g and 2g isn't that sufficient?

Thanks

We’ll start by switching off our 3G network in the Plymouth and Basingstoke areas in February 2023 @gazmix8We’ll share more information about our plans to switch off 3G across the rest of the UK soon on our dedicated 3G closure hubIn regards to the use of your services, I hope the below will provide more clarity on the matter:

- Device uses 3G for calls, texts and data: These phones will switch over to 2G for calls, texts and data.

- Device uses 4G for data, but 3G for calls and texts (No 4G calling): These phones will switch over to 2G for calls and texts. Data will continue on 4G.

- Device is set to use 4G for data, but 3G for calls and texts: These devices will switch over to 2G for calls and texts. Data will continue on 4G.

@Jason many thanks for your detailed explanation, yes i am 4g data & 3g for calls so it will switch to 2g. I need my old phone as it has apps that many current phones don't. I just wish this option was given out in emails by Vodafone that say i need to upgrade my phone.. Maybe assume everyone wants the latest all the time but i hear there maybe some vulnerabilities however if still being used until 2033 it can't be that bad.

Hiya, just an update.. I've just had a text through saying that yes i can stick with 2g calling when 3g ends in my area in June but i was wondering what the difference in quality is between 3g calling & 2g calling?

I don't use the phone too much for calls so will i notice anything different?  Also texts.. How would a text sent in 2g be different from a text in 3 or 4g?

Thanks

Hey @gazmix8 I've spoken with the networks team to get you some answers and the advice I have been given is that there won't be a noticeable difference in call and text quality from 3G to 2G as the 2G network carries your calls and texts anyway and 3G, 4G and 5G are primarily data supporting frequencies. The most noticeable difference will be data speeds in areas where 3G is switched off and 4G and 5G connections are either not available, or are considered patchy coverage. We are working to improve the capacity and strength of the 4G and 5G networks though so we can limit the disruption the switch off may cause for customers living in 2G and 3G only areas.

@Effie many thanks for your informative reply. Ah so texts and calls are carried by 2g anyway. Good to hear.

Will it say 2g as opposed to H when the 3g is turned off..

It should show as 2G @gazmix8 but I have asked for clarity on this to be sure.
