Hey there @Daveapples - If the phone is still in contract it would be the bill payers responsibility to pay the monthly bills. If there are any overdue bills not being paid then this could cause the phones services to be restricted and/or eventually disconnected. Please see our full terms and conditions here

Hi @Daveapples
Typically a network would bar outgoing services on the person's account.
A phone's imei is normally blacklisted if a phone is reported as lost or stolen.

I agree with @AnnS that one has to be very careful when buying phone's privately @Daveapples
That said many do sell unwanted upgrades to make a profit even when within their cooling off period.
Shops like Game, CEX and Trade Me In deal in buying and selling unwanted upgrades and unwanted used phone's. Buying via these would mean if the phone was blacklisted after being reported lost or stolen then you'd have the support of the shop.
That said many people buy phone's privately and experience no issues.
I wish you all the best with this.
