When upgrading to a new phone can you retain your Whatsapp messages? And if so, how?

You can try using a third party tool like TunesKit WhatsApp Transfer to back up your WhatsApp Messages. 

Also , you can use iCloud to back up your WhatsApp messages if you are an iPhone users (or Google Drive for Android)
