Solution

Accessing An Ip Camera

Claire D
Not applicable
I wonder if anyone can help me please?
I am trying to access an IP camera via IE and although it works fine on my network and other people on other networks can view it when I try using my Vodafone dongle all I get is a black screen and no picture.
I am nowhere near my data limit so I know it is not that.
Any assistance gratefully received.

Sounds like the software is using a Java applet, which is being blocked / "optimised" by the compression... I'm sure that this has come up on here before, with a solution, if you searched for a bit - I can't think of the answer off the top of my head, I'm afraid.

I have looked through some of the other threads and I have to say I am a bit baffled since it appears no-one has an answer.
My friend has just logged in to the ip camera site via his Orange dongle and hey-presto it works just fine.
I am more than a little disappointed because I deliberately bought this dongle to monitor my animals while I am at work and now it appears I cannot do so. :(

Hi Claire D

I can understand your disappointment but I'm sure we'll get to the bottom of this for you .

To investigate we'll need to run a few tests which I've listed below:

1 - Try a different web browser - for example Google Chrome. Does the same issue occur?

2 - Start your computer with the dongle already plugged in. Instead of loading VMC, go to Start -->Connect to --> Pick Vodafone (or VMC) and click Connect (or dial).

I think Neil_Brown is on the right track (thanks Neil) and the above two options might help to avoid this issue.

If it doesn't, could you provide a few more details so we can look into this further:

  • You mentioned your friend could access the site with their dongle but have you been able to access the site from your computer with a non Vodafone connection? (to rule out a problem with your computer)
  • Could you provide an example address we could go to, to see a broadcast (not your personal one as it wouldn’t be secure). If the website you're using has any public streams, we could test here on a dongle to see if we could find the problem.
  • Could you provide a screenshot of the problem? To do this when the problem is on screen, press the Print Screen button and then paste (Ctrl-V) into Microsoft Paint.

Hopefully the first two options will get you up and running but if not I'll speak to you soon. So whilst you have a few minutes online make sure to have a look around our website. We have lots of really good time saving features that mean you'll never need to call into a call centre or wait in a queue. :)

    Cheers

Hi, firstly, thank you for your help. It is much appreciated. :)

No I get an active-X error with any other browser than IE but that is different from the problem I am having now. The other browsers just do not allow me to see the webcam java applet.
What happens with my Vodafone dongle is I can get right through to the applet but the screen is black.

2 - Start your computer with the dongle already plugged in. Instead of loading VMC, go to Start -->Connect to --> Pick Vodafone (or VMC) and click Connect (or dial).

Interestingly this does not work - I cannot dial in using the "connect to" function - it comes back with an error. I have not changed any settings since I installed the dongle (other than that which came with the dongle and installed first time around) so I am not sure what is going on there?

You mentioned your friend could access the site with their dongle but have you been able to access the site from your computer with a non Vodafone connection? (to rule out a problem with your computer.

I can successfully access the site using any other ISP - I used it at home and on another friend's ISP.

Does that help narrow it down a bit?

Hi, whilst my comments may not help you directly, i am currently connected to the internet using my E172, connected to my netbook, and have just observed she who must be obeyed on my webcam in the garden, i have also checked the camera at my holiday home, again no problem, using IE8. My cameras are a mixture of makes, Panasonic, Axis, and a 4 channel video server of dubious origin.
I think you should make sure you have the current version of Java installed, and make sure active x is enabled, also, even if you are not able to see your video streaming, try downloading a still frame.
Also may be worth checking your firewall settings, start by disabling it for a short time to see if it helps.

Thanks - I have the current version of java and there's nothing on the screen except a black box so I can't download a still frame even. :(
It works on this laptop on a couple of other connections - it is just the vodafone that does not seem to like it.

If you run

ipconfig /all

you should be able to see the IP address of your current session.

If you enter this IP address into the proxy box in the settings for the Java applet, does this work.

In desperation last night I uninstalled java, updated IE and re-installed java - hey presto it is working fine now - I'm a happy bunny. :)

Thank you for all your help and suggestions.
