Cant get my E172 working on windows 7 - run out of things to try

ps

3: Seeker

I'm currently having issues with my Huawei E172. I cannot get the driver to install correctly. Every time I try, I get the same message from windows "the driver did not install correctly".

I have uninstalled, reinstalled, got version 10 of the software, installed that, connected the dongle, same issue. I even uninstalled all the software, uninstalled the device (plus dirvers). I also then went into the system32/drivers section and renamed these files: ewdsc.sys ewusbdev.sys and ewusbmdm to have the appendix of .old.

I deleted the vodafone modem in the device manager and told it to delete the driver too. To be safe, I also renamed all drivers that were named ew***

I have tried version 10 of the software, no dice, and also version 9, with the same issue.

I have also tried the software on the USB stick, but each and every time, I get the error that the driver did not install correctly.

I will post up some screenshots of what I am experiencing.

Screenshot of windows failing to install the driver.

---Trying again---

Just done a "clean boot", and renamed all the old drivers.

So I am now installing the version 10 software, with the USB modem removed.

Plug the modem in, and it says "device detected", but I cannot click connect.

Checked the device manager, and sure enough, error code 31 again. The USB dongle is flashing blue to show its got 3g signal, so there should be signal to connect.

I've tried every "fix" that I can find on the net, and I'm now at a loss. I cant seem to get this thing working on my windows7 machine. The dongle works fine on vista and xp, but not on this windows 7 machine.

I really need some help on this, as its driving me insane trying to get it working. (The old software would tell me RAS 633 whenever i tried clicking conect)

p.s I've also tried your fix posted in the FAQ to change the Com port higher, and that didnt work either._E

*Edit - apparently I need to add lithium.com to my adblocker plus to have paragraph formatting.....*

Hi ps

I have an update for you on this issue. :Smiling:

Our data specialist has supplied me with a Patch Tool to rectify this issue. I have attached both the tool, and the instruction guide to this thread.

Let me know how you get on.

Hi,

Are you running WIn 7 32 or 64 bits?

From what I read on the forums and my own experience Vodafone software is not really friends with Win 7 64 bits. I hope someone in the developemnt team will eventually become aware of this... and then please, please, will fix the issues.

Hi, yeah. Unfortunately, from what I've also seen, its not friends with 64 bit (which is what I'm running)

I've seen quite a few posts of people getting it working with 64 bit though, so I still have hopes it may work. I have tried again all week, trying every tip and trick on the web, and I'm no closer to getting this working. Having to pay for hotel internet when I have a dongle thats pretty much being useless next to me is annoying. Paying twice for the same service. yaay!

Hi ps,

It's disappointing to hear of the issue you have had trying to get this to work.

I have come across similar issues in the past, but all have been resolved by fixes you have already attempted. I use VMB on a 64bit myself and it works fine. I am going to have a word with an expert in this area and get back to you on this thread as soon as I can.

Hi all.

Apologies for the late reply, work's been a bit busy this week.

I've attached my Msinfo32 output, I've deleted the computer name, and login details. The rest is as-is.

Thanks again for looking into this.I can reinstall windows as a final last resort, but I'd like to not have to do it if I can get away with it.

Thanks

Hi PS

Thanks for your Msinfo32 details :Smiling:

Can you confirm the actual problem you are having?

I noticed this was done without the device plugged in.  Could you send another log with the device plugged in.

Also what version of the softwre are you currently using? We suspect your using 3.2 and from the log you have sent there appears to be a DLL conflict between the version 3.2 and windows 7. It might be worth  installing  the new version  (10.1) to see if this resolves the issue for you.

I've just had a look through these and can’t identify a problem as such.  I've contacted one of our device specialists with a proposed work around as I would like to make sure the information I'm giving you is correct.

As soon as I have a response back, I will let you know.

Thanks for your patience

Hi Benj.

Thanks again for your quick response, its very much appreciated.

You may have seen version 3 (Which is on the stick itself). I've been going back and forth between VMC versions, trying to get it working, uninstalling the software as I go along before I install the newer (or older - on the stick) for testing purposes.

The problem I'm getting is, the VMC software "detects" the usb stick, and looking in the device manager, I always (no matter which USB port I'm plugged into) get an "This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)"

This happens after a clean boot, fully uninstalling the software, hunting down the drivers in the system32/drivers folder, and renaming those.

I plug it back in, and it goes through the motions of reinstalling itself, and right at the end, the baloon on the taskbar always states "windows was unable to load the driver for the device"

I have attached my msinfo again with the modem plugged in (with version 10 of the VMC)

As I'm posting this, I've included screen grabs of what the "basic view" and "advanced view" are showing.

Basic view says no device detected.

Advanced view finds the modem, attached to COM3 (I changed this back from COM14 after testing it a couple of weeks ago, which didnt solve the issue), but the enabled button is unticked.

Heres my basic view screen grab: http://img130.imageshack.us/i/basicview.jpg/

Advanced view screen grab: http://img145.imageshack.us/i/advancedview.jpg/

If there is anything else I can help with (or be more clear), please let me know. I  can arrange for my PC to be remotely controlled if that is what you want too.

Hey ps,

Many thanks for the very useful information. It's really helped us.

There is a workaround for this, but first of all, we require you to back up your registry. Just click the link and follow the instructions before proceeding:

1. Go to start menu
2. Run ‘regedit’
3. Open this key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\
{4D36E96D-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
4. In this key, find the “Installer32” string.
5. If the Microsoft Registration Key is missing, the key has to be added manually.
6. Create a “string” value named “Installer32”, and set it to “mdminst.dll,ClassInstall32”
5. Save the ‘regedit’
6. Open the device manage
7. Find the modem with problem; update the modem driver again by reinstalling VMC 10.1.108

Let me know how you get on.

Cheers,

Lee

Hi Lee

I have followed your instructions to the letter and added a few steps here and there. Additional steps performed are added with an asterisk.

*Removed the modem from the computer

1. Go to start menu
2. Run ‘regedit’
3. Open this key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\
{4D36E96D-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
4. In this key, find the “Installer32” string.
5. If the Microsoft Registration Key is missing, the key has to be added manually.
6. Create a “string” value named “Installer32”, and set it to “mdminst.dll,ClassInstall32”

Screenshot showing the registry addition: http://img832.imageshack.us/i/registryj.jpg/
5. Save the ‘regedit’ (You cant save the registry)

* Uninstalled VMC currently on the computer

*Performed a Clean boot - running no additional services or applications

*Deleted any ew*.sys in my system32/drivers folder.

*Installed VMC 10.1.108

*Went back into the registry to ensure the string I added earlier was still there (it was)

6. Open the device manager, and verified that there was no reference to any huawei devices.

*Started the VMC application. I went to the advanced > devices, and rather oddly, it had listed "Vodafone Mobile Broadband Secondary Port Modem(Huawei) (COM3) before I had even reconnected it to the computer.

*Deleted the device from the VMC application

*Inserted the USB modem, the computer went through the motions of installing the modem, and at the very end, I got an error as shown in this next screenshot.

http://img52.imageshack.us/i/installfailed.jpg/

I went into device manager and checked the properties of the Data Interface and this is the error I got.

"This device is not configured correctly. (Code 1)

The install class is not present or is invalid.

To find a driver for this device, click Update Driver."

I then clicked Update driver, and told my computer to look in the following location for drivers. C:\Program Files (x86)\Vodafone

The version of the driver it installs is ewusbmdm.sys 2.0.6.705

7. Find the modem with problem; update the modem driver again by reinstalling VMC 10.1.108

I am now back at square 1, the device manager still says Code31 for the huawei modem. The modem is blinking a blue light while plugged in, and is still unusable.

I'm no closer to getting this sorted I'm afraid. :smileysad:
