Good Evening george d,
A very warm welcome to the eForum! You have come to the right place for help!
I'm afraid you haven't been given the correct information, there isn't such a thing as half a connection! I'm sure we can get to the bottom of it though!
First of all, when you plug the modem into your minibook can you hear the audio alert to say it has recognised new hardware? You can also check this by going to 'My Computer' and checking if there is a drive for VMC.EXE. If there is, double click and this should launch the dashboard for you.
If there is no drive can you please follow the directions below.
Go to Start, Control Panel, Phone/Modem, Modem tab and delete any modems showing. After doing this please reboot the minibook twice.
Once restarted you will need to download the VMC software, you can do this by clicking here. (On the right handside you will see VMC 9.3.6, this is what you need to select.)
I'm sure you will be up and running in no time, please let me know how you get on! You can find loads of excellent troubleshooting guides in our Help Centre as well so take a look!

Hi George,
Unfortunately we only support the Top-up-and-Go Modem on Windows Installations - however, there is a thriving Linux development community over at BetaVine (our R&D department) who will be in a much better position to assist you further with this.
All your settings appear to be correct with regards to the APN settings, so I'm all out of ideas from our side, sorry
Jon
