Solution

Recently downloaded the new update and since receiving it, have noticed a large number of crashes / reboots on the device even with no activity.
I've seen on other topics that the only solution is a factory wipe, but certain applications require root access which I don't have, so need to find a way to get those saved before doing this.
Also ... wouldn't a factory wipe simply re-start the update process meaning that the phone on the next software update would update back to this (potentially) faulty update version?
Any plans to release an additional update to resolve this version?

Soupdragon ... lovely idea and yes you seemingly do.
some games do not have their folders in the android/data/... folders and even if you open some folders in there you get no files. There is some level of protection on them.
e.g. subwaysurf, newstarsoccer
And whilst I'd be disappointed to lose certain data, the key point is that doing a full reset is no guarantee that the update is going to be fine, and it would be doubly disappointing to do the reset, lose data, and still not have a working phone.
I've not had to do a full reset for any update to date, and it's a worrying statement that you seem to repeat to anyone who has anything "slightly querky" with an update, as if that is the defacto resolution.
I'll be performing the reset shortly and then will report back.

Mind you ... the "contacts" application won't even open to allow me to perform a backup of my contacts (that I might not already have on Google contacts), so it's hard to be happy doing a backup when you've not been able to even give yourself some level of peace of mind.

Does the Contact app not have an Import/Export option? Every Android device I've owned/used has that and I use it regularly.

Yes, it does.
But you can't use that option if the application won't open, which was what I said in my previous post. It wouldn't open.
For the record, it crashed a number of times on trying to open, and then finally (when I clicked wait about 4 times) it opened and I have now exported my contacts. It's just another area of instabilty since this update.

I suspect that's all down to the need for a reset.
