If you're connected to wifi or another hotspot you should be using this connection rather than your own mobile data.
Its worth checking that your own phone isn't getting used as a hotspot by others + you're only connecting to wifi or another hotspot.
If you still have problems let the Community know what make and model of phone you're using.

To find out what's using your data, you can install an app such as My Data Manager, which will be able to analyse down the app and the hour, allowing you to nail the culprit quickly. As Redpages says, you won't be charged while you're using wifi, but you do need to make sure that yoru phone doesn't lose the connection and drop back to mobile data.
