How do I activate a new nano sim?

Got a new iPhone 6 contract with Vodafone yesterday. I am still waiting for the SIM card to activate. I have a full signal. I am unable to receive phone calls, or send text messages. As it says the phone is not connected. What is the problem?

It says on my gmail account set up on the BB that email, calendar and contacts are synced. Is that good?

Yes that's good. If you log into a PC or laptop and then log into your google account you should be able to check if your contacts are there.

Calendar is synced. Contacts are not. As I use BT email as normal account and only use gmail occasionally.

So I'm ready to roll. All contacts and calendar now on gmail ready to import. Will then need to copy photos to PC at some point via a card reader. Now I can activate SIM. Does anyone know if this can only be done between certain hours when doing on line?
