How to Find out your Broadband Sync Speed

Hi,

To help work where problems are on Vodafone Connections there is a BT Openreach website that will report your data throughput speed (similar to normal speed tests) but also the sync speed which is normally close to the maximum possible throughput speed.

The website is http :// speedtest . btwholesale . com/

(Remove the space) or Google "bt wholesale speed test"

On the first page you'll get some text about setting up the test, which you may or may not want to follow.

Note: Resetting FTTC modems more than once an hour will affect your sync speed, and resetting it more than a certain number of times a day will also affect line speed. From link at end of post:

"

The DLM only counts 'forced' retrains and will disregard any resyncs detected as being an Unforced Retrain or one caused by a Wide Area Event.

An unforced retrain is one in which the user switches off or unplugs their modem for "a period of time greater than the minimum period of time" and that a minimum period of time prior to or after a resynchronisation has elapsed without the line automatically attempting, but failing to establish a connection.

Because we know that the DLM collects data bins every 15 mins and that it monitors traffic count to see if the line is in use, it is therefore recommended if possible to try to leave the router switched off for 30 mins to ensure that the DLM sees at least one complete period of inactivity prior to the resync."

At the bottom. Select yes and Begin Test

Wait for the test to complete and it will give the data transfer speed.

Once the test is complete click "Further Diagnostics" at the bottom of the screen.

Where it ask for "Telephone Number of the broadband circuit:" Enter your full phone number without spaces, then click "Run Diagnostic Test"

Click OK on the dialog box that open to confirm your phone number.

It will return your data throughput and max throughput which is the approx the sync speed.

Vodafone uses will need to exit the tests at this point as the next section requires the user to change the modem username password. I haven't tried this so I don't know what the next sections of test are.

There is a http :// www . kitz . co . uk / adsl / DLM.htm

(remove the spaces)

or search for kitz dlm.

The artical is in full on geek but gives an idea how things work between the moden and openreach.

For reading these forums I reckon the Vodafone maybe using "Stable profile" which may explain the slow connection speeds.
