"Does the version used by vodaclient actually need a bootloader unlock code?"
Nope I just followed the instructions in the PDF that came inside the ZIP from the Huawei site. The PDF is really clear as long as you're prepared to ignore section 1.1 "The Following Versions Can Be Upgraded". I just followed section 4.2 "Normal Upgrade" and ended up with ICS. The Gingerbread menus were close enough to the screenshots in the PDF to figure out which GB options to follow. Here's the link again.

Ann.
Usually the BootLoader only needs to be unlocked to install a 3rd Party "Custom" Firmware.
My post was in response to "hazelbee" wanting to unlock their Bootloader. :smileywink:
EDIT:
Also allows a Custom Recovery to be installed. :smileywink:

only problem is that an increasing number of apps (incl. Chrome for android) are only available for 4.0 and up. If I could work out how to get bootloader unlock code,I would ditch Vodafone GB in a heartbeat.
You can apply for a free BootLoader Unlock Password from Huawei HERE
You will then need to install ADB (Android Debug Bridge) and Fastboot
You can read the instructions HERE

Unfortunately, I can't use the form for Huawei bootloader unlock as when I run the ussd code to obtain product id. (isn't anywhere that I see on paperwork or packaging that came with phone) entering the last "*" on the string stated clears the whole entry. I've tried several permutations of *#*#1357946#*#* but no luck. Have tried using Vodafone sim and Asda sim (vodafone virtual network operator) to no avail. Is there a workaround for this to obtain unlock code direct from Huawei? Question has been asked on other sites but with no answers posted. I emailed Huawei but they just directed me back to the link that you've provided. Thanks for any help that you can provide with this.

Hi hazelbee
Have a look under the battery. There is usually a Label with all the Phone's details in the battery compartment?

Sorry to drag this one back but just checked my G300 for firmware updates as I've kept to B895 (Gingerbread). After all the fuss concerning upgrade to ICS we noticed that Voda were no longer offering the upgrade, when you checked for update on phone it said none available.
Well, now I am offered a firmware upgrade U8815_vodafone_B936_F
released date 2012-10-17 size: 386mb
Is this the same one that was around last year or is the "_F" bit indicating a modified file?
My G300 is running along OK with GB so not inclined to take a chance but there are now a lot of apps that require ICS and above to run and can't afford a new phone at the moment.

Hello again, and Merry Christmas!
I still check the Huawei board regularly "for old time's sake" but find I jump out of my skin if there's anything here. A month ago it wasn't great, but thanks for your kind message at the time.
I don't know what to make of this. The "_F" bit isn't new, as that was part of the title when I used the upgrade in early Nov 2012, but it seems to have had a slightly different release date (2012-08-01 according to some upgrade instructions which I printed as a PDF at the time), so I guess it isn't exactly the same version. Ha! Just investigated, and the instructions are still on the VF website HERE - they are dated 2012-11-01, when VF actually released the upgrade, so the upgrade you've been offered was in theory issued before that.
B936 certainly didn't seem very stable, on the showing of all the problems that were reported, but those who moved on to B952 when that later became available seemed on the whole to fare better, so I think I'd want to be sure that there was a further step available before taking this one.
Also, like you, I have a phone that runs along nicely on GB, even if it is a bit limited in terms of available apps, and I'm reluctant to put that at risk, especially as I suspect that the upgrade works best on a phone that's "new out of the box" rather than one that has been out in the real world for a year and more. Also I'm increasingly of the view that you expressed a month ago, that the phone is just too low in memory and processor power to cope all that well with the upgrade. I rather suspect that VF never really decided exactly why the upgrade was so hit-and-miss - they must have lab-tested it before release, and had satisfactory results, so why was there such a problem when we all tried to use it for real?
I'd certainly recommend caution, and see what thoughts others come up with, especially if buying a new phone at the moment isn't really a viable option.
EDIT: I've just checked, and I'm being offered the upgrade - I wasn't sure what to expect, as there was a stage when those (like me) who had used the downgrade option from B936 to B895 were unable to get back up to B936, while those who had never retreated could upgrade to B936 and then on to B952. But I've also had time to think further about it, and I'm staying put where I am! It's a nice little phone, it does all of what I need and most of what I'd like, so it seems silly to put that at risk. When it's really on its last legs, I might try the upgrade if it's still on offer, and see what happens!
All the best!
Annie.

Thanks for that Annie and your last comment....

I agree. I think I'll leave well enough alone rather than mess things up completely. A shame when you can't trust them to get upgrades right.
Keep up the good work here if you can and wish you well for New Year
Edit later
I've been looking around Ebay and other places and copied this from a seller/reviewer "This phone also has superior Samsung memory chip, not the inferior Hynix memory." That might be a clue as to why some would update trouble free?

Heavens! Having seen this, I've just checked, and yes, I'm also finding the B936 upgrade being offered, though I have absolutely no intention of taking up the offer. It doesn't seem all that long ago (perhaps during that bad-tempered exchange at the beginning of December) that I checked out of idle curiosity, and nothing was available.
I wonder why they've released the upgrade OTA now - it seems to be a later version than the one that caused all the trouble, but not very much later, so it seems unlikely that it could address all the issues that arose. Perhaps someone who doesn't know the whole sorry history OK'd it? Like Annie, I might try upgrading when my phone seems to be on the point of konking out (although by then I'd expect an upgrade to kill it off altogether) - but I think I might try the B952 version suggested by vodaclient in post 29 above.
Ah well, whatever you decide, all the best for 2014!
EDIT: Now that I've posted, I've seen jaysonuk's edit. "superior Samsung memory chip, not the inferior Hynix memory" - was there some change to the later phones that were actually sold, do you suppose, or was this something done to phones that went in for repair? I can't now remember all the details, but I'm sure that there was a phase when the upgrades were only available via a warranty repair. The speculation at the time was that this might ensure that the upgrade was done under controlled conditions, but perhaps it was so that they could put an adequate memory chip in place? On my PC I've found a screenshot of some discussion about the upgrade, which refers to 'serious resource management issues' - would a superior memory chip fix this??

Oh dear, I hope not! Some interesting thoughts here, whatever the background situation.
I've just checked, and I still have on my PC the zip-file of the downgrade from B936 to B895. I've no idea whether it's still available on the Huawei support website, but if anyone plays around with this new upgrade then regrets it, no doubt I can find some way of getting the downgrade to you. Though be aware that the downgrade probably doesn't work from B952, and conceivably might not work from this new (?) version of B936.
Annie.
