K3565 Rev 2 and Ubuntu - can't connect

Hello,

I recently purchased a Vodafone K3565 (Rev 2) TopUp and Go USB dongle.

With Windows Vista and Windows 7 it works fine, no problems.

But I can’t get it to work with Ubuntu Linux (8.04.2 Hardy Heron)

I have tried to get it working using 3 different methods:

Using the Ubuntu Network Connections Wizard

I select Edit Connections/Mobile Broadband and click Add

I enter the following details:

Number: *99#
Username: web
Password: web
APN: ppbundle.internet

With Ipv4 Settings set to Automatic (PPP) addresses only

I understand the above settings to be correct for TopUp and Go devices?

When I try to connect, it displays the ‘connecting’ icon for a while then the message:

“GSM Network Disconnected – you are now offline”

Using the Betavine Vodafone Mobile Connect Software (2.10.01)

The program installed fine but when I press connect it displays the connecting message for a while then I get the message:

“Disconnected from Internet

Vodafone Mobile Connect has given up after trying to connect three times to Internet. This might be provoked by a problem or the configuration or just the fact that there’s no carrier.”

This is using the same username, APN settings, etc, as above

Using wvdial

I tried setting up wvdial with the following settings in the /etc/wvdial.conf configuration file:

Init1 = ATZ
Init2 = AT00 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
Modem Type = Analog Modem
Baud = 9600
New PPPD = yes
Modem = /dev/ttyUSB2
ISDN = 0
Phone = *99#
Password = web
Username = web

When I run wvdial it trys to connect then returns the error message:

“NO CARRIER”

Can anyone help me connect with any of the above methods? Thanks for any guidance.

Hi JimboMonkey,

Firstly, a very warm welcome to the eForum Family, it's always great to see new faces on here :).

As none of our Mobile Broadband modems officially support Ubuntu, I'm unable to provide any direct assistance here. The best advice I can really give is that the Betavine software is the preferred method of connection.

If any Ubuntu users know how to set this up, then feel free to post.

I'm an Arch linux user, not Ubuntu. But I think I can help...

There is a new application available to linux now called Sakis3G which should solve your problem and make connecting very easy. It's well worth looking up, it has support for a large variety of modems and service providers.

I've used it with ZTE and Huawei sticks and with O2, T-Mobile, Three networks and of course with Vodafone (the older 1GB £15 PAYG). It does not have the means to top-up or read emails tho. It is simply a mobile broadband/bluetooth connection manager.

http://www.sakis3g.org/

It's a very small shell-script with few dependancies (utilises pppd and/or wvdial to make a connection) and it contains an embedded Usb-ModeSwitch.

Hi Jimbo,

The problem is not necessarily specific for neither K3565 nor Ubuntu.
I've got the (apparently) same problem with wvdial, Debian Squeeze and the ZTE MF637 Stick. The stick worked well when I tried with a Windows XP computer.

Did you succeed in the meantime ?
Did you already try the sakis3g suggestion ?

Here's my wvdial.conf file for comparison:

Init4 = AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","event.vodafone.de"
Username = vodafone
Password = vodafone
Phone = *99#

Init3 = AT+CPIN=XXXX

Init1 = ATZ
Init2 = ATQ0 V1 E1 +FCLASS=0
AutoDNS = 1
Check Def Route = on
Modem Type = Analog Modem
Stupid Mode = 1
Baud = 9600
New PPPD = yes
Dial Command = ATDT
Modem = /dev/ttyUSB1
ISDN = 0
Phone = *99#
Password = vodafone
Username = vodafone

Remarks: I use a 4-digit pin (removed); the low Baud rate is detected by wvdialconf; I hope it is not correct and can be increased later...
My file separates the pin input; I need to type
wvdial pin
wvdial vodafone
(The separation is because the stick accepts the pin input only a single time - while I needed to modify/retry with "vwdial vodafone" multiple times.)

Anyway, the result is:
...
--> Modem initialized.
--> Sending: ATDT*99#
--> Waiting for carrier.
ATDT*99#
NO CARRIER
--> No Carrier! Trying again.
--> Sending: ATDT*99#
--> Waiting for carrier.
...
and so on.
