K3565 modem - Poor Connection Speeds

TonyM
Not applicable
Hi,

I have had the K3565 dongle for about 2 months. I have tried to use the broadband in 3 different areas and I only ever get a poor or very poor signal, with the speed being really slow. I have spoken to the vodafone help desk, but all the tell me is that the signal is rated as good in the areas I have given then. I get connected to 3G/3G+ at all locations (light blue light on modem). Is there any way I can improve the signal strength as it is really frustrating. regards

Hi Tiger Tony,

Hmmm... well, perception of speed is rather relative - our modem on basic 3G up against a 6mb/s optical connection will always be slow

Can you try going to http://www.broadbandspeedchecker.co.uk/ and test the speed? The average for 3G transmission download speed should be approx 1.5 to 3.2 mbps, or 150 to 300 kbps (non 3.5 HSDPA).

You could always try to improve connection speed further by locating yourself next to a window, and / or using a longer extension cable to distance the modem from the body of your computer and further outside it's electromagnetic field (all electronic items emit this field, and if the computer is not properly shielded, can interfere with wireless signal transmissions).

Let us know how you get on,

I purchased a active USB cable, 5m long, you can stick it in the window or hang it outside if it's dry.

They are available here,

Hi Daz,

I have tried connecting from outside my home and also using an extension cable - but the speed or signal does not seem to increase. I carried out a test using a broadband speed checker, it shows download as being 200k. I also tried to download the Vodafone protection file last night, but gave up after 2 hours. The signal was going between 3G+, 3G, GPRS and HSUPA. The signal strength never goes above two bars in any location. There is a mast within 50 yards of my home located on top of a Fire Station. (don't know if that has any relevance or not, or if it is Vodafone). I have recieved a replacement sim from the Vodafone shop but no different. Also the dongle is a K3765 not K3565, as I stated.

hi Tigertony

Broadband data speed via the USB modems is almost always determined by signal strength and proximity to masts, as well as any obstructions between the device and any signal source.

Please can you provide the exact post code of where your modem is located, we can check coverage and try to paint a better picture of all factors at play, :)

Thanks

Hi TonyTiger

I have just taken a close look at coverage at the postcode you gave HU9 3TX.

You should have excellent GPRS coverage, but the 3G coverage is variable. This means it's highly likely that your dongle is fluctuating between the two services, thus effecting your connection speeds.

Planned coverage shows a better 3G service in that area in the near future.
