Keeping my current plan

I will be eligible for an upgrade on the 1St of may and as I'm happy with my current contract would like to keep it, can I do that and just upgrade the handset,  also the handsets seem to be limited choice,  any help would be much appreciated.

When you upgrade, you will automatically be put onto one of the latest tariffs.  The tariff you are now on will be obsolete.

When the current agreement ends, Vodafone will put the contract onto the equivalent new 30 day contract.  Even if the contract rolls over to a 30 day contract you will be unable to keep the same tariff.

You are free to look at third party dealers. They may be able to offer other phones. The other alternative is to buy SIM free and take a 12 month SIM free contract.

You can keep your current contract after the upgrade date of you wish as the term will evolve onto a 30 day rolling contract. You can't keep your current contract cost and allowances and just upgrade the phone. When a person upgrades through the network everything is basically reset so the contract starts again for 24 months with a new monthly price and new allowances. 

That said some of the sim only Vodafone contracts in particular the 12 Month ones may offer better tariff costs and allowances. 

You are free to sell your current phone and use any accrued funds and disposable income to buy a new phone from Vodafone on Payg or say Carphone Warehouse. Sometimes Cpw do offer a more varied choice of handsets.

Apart from iPhones the phones supplied from Carphone warehouse are supplied unlocked. So what I used to do was choose the phone I wanted on the best price on whichever network on Payg , use and bundled Credit and dispose of the SIM card and insert my own sim. 

Highstreet shops such as CEX buy and sell mobile phones. Some are unwanted Network upgrades so never probably used. Just ensure it's listed as unlocked or locked to Vodafone. Take your sim with you to test it in the phone.
