LG G4 and BBM, no notifications

I have just changed from a Blackberry Z10 to an LG G4.

I downloaded the BBM App as it's the one I, and my friends, prefer to use.

When BBM is closed, I do not receive notifications, no red number or star and it doesn't vibrate, although it is set do so.

It wil only vibrate and give me an LED notification when the app is left open.

I'd prefer not to do this when not around wifi to save on data usage.

Every LG and Blackberry hints an tips site I've looked at does not offer a resolution to this.....

So, over to the experts...any suggestions guys?

If you look at the app on Google Play, is there a "contact developer" option?  I've used it a couple of times, with mixed results, but it would be the place to start.   I'd assume it's more an app than an LG thing, unless you know otherwise.
