Solution

LG G5 Screen Burn/Ghosting

Hi community,

I've noticed over the past week or two that after having my screen on for more than just a peak or to send a quick message, I seem to be getting a bit of screen burning or ghosting.

It's most notable with the icons along the top of the screen (I. E. Music player icon still showing slightly after it has been closed), but other things are showing up as ghosts all over the screen if it has been on for long enough (only about 10/15 minutes though).

The ghosting disappears after a while, but surely this shouldn't be happening with such a high quality screen.

Has anyone else had any issues with the same handset (running Nougat) and has any ideas for fixes? I've been factory reseting a fair bit recently as I already had battery issues since the Nougat update and that hasn't solved anything.

Thanks all!

I seem to remember reading somewhere that OLED screens were more prone to burn - though perhaps it's actually ghosting/retention.   If that's relevant here, it could well be a software issue that could/would be fixed in an update.   The question would be when/if it got rolled out by Vodafone.  Networks don't always pass on what they see as minor updates - and sales volumes come into it too.

@hrym OLED screen do, in my experience, suffer particularly badly with screen burn. The LG G5 uses an LCD panel though so shouldn't have the same problems  :smileywink:

@wwhyte92

Sorry to hear you're having issues with the screen on your phone.

If your phone's still under warranty, pop along along to your local Vodafone store and we'll take a look.

If, as I think the consensus is, this is a software issue, there's probably no point in going down the repair route.  You could try adjusting the display settings, but wait for any further updates for a more long-term fix.

@hrym To my knowledge, this isn't a software issue it's a characteristic of IPS LCD panels.

Where software comes into it is that the recent update LG have supposedly chosen a "bright white" for the icon colors. Bright whites end to be retained on the screen longer than dimmer colors.

The solution/workaround I'm using is to apply a filter to the screen that effectively changes the bright white to a dimmer white, see screenshots below

Hope that makes sense?

I got that, @Nabs, but this seems to have happened - or at least become more obvious - since the update. If there is a fix coming, I suspect it may be very similar to the workround you've found. Either way, I don't think it's a repair issue.

@hrym I don't think there is anything to fix. It's a design choice that LG has made. They could change LG UX color's in future but I don't think it's a requirement to do so.
It may, of course, be causing issue with some of their phones with OLED panels though.

There are two forms of panel currently in use by manufacturers, Oled and LCD.

The pixels of each display act totally differently when at rest.
An Oled display turns off power to an individual pixel to produce Black. This is why "peek" works effectively on Samsung displays because black pixels use no power.

An LCD display is basically the opposite, but not quite...
A pixel is never actually turned off but in extreme power save mode a pixel will display as white! (A black pixel uses the most power because it is made from all colours)

What I think is happening is that some of the white (power save) pixels are not waking up as quickly as others, this is causing a "ghosting effect".

Is this a hardware issue or a software issue...? It's probably a bit of both? In as much as delayed waking of white pixels could be down to power management by hardware or it could be a software glitch? Only LG will truly know.....

This is simply my opinion based on my understanding of how pixels are used. 😊
