Massive android os data usage

I have just got the S7 with a 10gb data allowance. I previously had a S5 with 1gb. My new S7 has had 4.19gb of data used in the last 2 days as background data for the android os. Please can someone advise how this is possible? I have turned background data off but still want to now what can use this amount of data?

Hi,

Im using the Samsung s7 edge and use it pretty heavy and not using how much you are.

Do you turn off mobile data when on wifi.

Have you looked in Apps, Settings and data usage to see what's using what.

Has any apps or firmware updated over mobile data instead of wifi.

There are various settings to tweak to keep data usage down.

Thanks for the reply. When I look at the data usage the 4.19gb is all down to android os and again all as background data. I cannot understand what could use that amount of data in such a short time as I have hardly anything installed. All other apps show what i would expect to see. The next highest is play store at 430mb but I have downloaded a few things via data and this is acceptable.

You're welcome.

You could try clearing the system cache.

My android os usage is 19.45mb

My Background Data is toggled on.

I have now attached some screen shots to show my usage, also just checked my S5 and it has hardly any usage by android os. 4gb is more that I download in a week on my laptop lol

Android os is also my biggest user of battery

I didn't check mine when I first purchased it directly off Samsung to see if the Gb usage was high from first setting it up.

Hopefully this is connected to first setting it up it up and it updating etc.

Hi. Did you do any firmware updates on the phone ?

If this persists I would advise a factory reset and if it's still the same send it back for repair. Back everything up before any reset.

It did one firmware update the first day I got it which was Tuesday but the high data usage started yesterday and today. 4.2gb is more than a computer os update, in fact larger than the whole os itself lol

Yeah I'd agree that would be one heck of an update.  :Winking_smiley:

You sound like you know your stuff with the phone but just to mention if you do consider a Factory Reset then do perform a back up to preserve your data.

The clearing of system cache which I mentioned earlier as far as I understand it does not affect your information.

Has that amount of data actually been taken from your Vodafone data allowance? It's been known for a phones data monitor to be off at times.

I note you say you've just got the phone.

If under 30 days old and directly from Vodafone then you do have 30 days to have it swapped out and only a repair after that timeframe.
