When upgrading my phone contract, what's the maximum amount I can pay upfront to bring the overall monthly price down? I'd like to pay £400 if I can.

You will be agreeing to a 24 month contract with a monthly line rental charge and depending on the handset an upfront charge if applicable.  The price plans on offer with any upfront charges can be found on the online shop.

 

The other alternative is to purchase the phone SIM free paying the full cost and go SIM only.  This will save you a lot of money.

You can't bring the monthly tariff down unless the retention department agree a discount and apply it or your eligible for employers discount @carlmorecroft

You could open the contra t up and pay a sum of money into the account to help cover future bills.
