Solution

Mobile Broadband - Installation Problem

Voronin
Not applicable
Hi,

I recently purchased Mobile Broadband PAYG. Unfortunately I can't seem to get the software to successfully install.

When I insert the dongle (or access it through My Computer) it runs through the installation process. I can see the shortcuts being placed on the desktop and a folder created on the C drive. However, after it has completed the 'starting services' process the status pop-up on the wizard displays the message "Rolling back action", the progress bar goes into reverse and everything is removed.

I've tried disabling the AV (Kaspersky 2009) and wireless function but still no joy. I'd be grateful for any advice.

I'm running Windows XP Home (SP 2).

Thanks,
Mark

Hi voronin

Welcome to the eForum :)

The message is from your operating system and many things can cause it. Simple problems such as not being an administrator, AV interference, firewall blocks and so on.

I can only suggest 2 things to try.

Firstly, why not install SP3 and see if that cures it? If it doesn't fix the probelm, remove SP3 and RELOAD SP2.

Hope this works for you.

Best Wishes

Hi,

Thanks for the advice.

I am already using an administrator account but I tried the SP suggestions (I already turned off AV and Firewalls) without any luck. I guess it's now a return to the shop.

Thanks.

Hi Voronin

there could be a few reasons for this.

Services related:

  • select Start > Run > and type services.msc.
  • Scroll down the list of services until you find telephony.
  • Right mouse click on telephony, set the startup type drop down to Automatic.
  • select Apply then OK.
  • Do the same for :
  • Remote access connection manager.
  • network connections.
  • If you are on a version of windows Media centre edition. then:
  • Select WMC (extender scheduler and receiver) right mouse click on all of these entries individually and set startup type to disabled.
  • Reboot and retest
Modems related:

  • Select Start > Control panel.
  • Make sure you are in Classic view.
  • Select Phone and Modem options
  • Select Modems Tab or if windows asks for dialing information fill in your local area dialing code and ignore anything else on this tab.
  • Once in the Modems tab view which modems are listed, if any duplicate or obsolete modems then please remove these.
  • Reboot and retest.

If you have the chance please test this, and let me know how you get on.

All the best

Hi BenJ,

Thanks for the suggestions.

Unfortunately none of them were successful and I still have the same problem. I tried completely uninstalling the AV and Firewall but this also didn't work.

Hi Voronin,

Can you try the following for me?

- Go to the Start Menu
- For XP, select Run, type msconfig and click OK. For Vista type msconfig in the search bar and double click on the returned msconfig file
- Go to the Startup tab
- Scroll down the list and look for "fixcamera" listed under the Startup Item column and untick it if present
- Click apply and ok and follow options to restart the PC
- Retest installation
