Mobile Broadband - Why are my emails being delayed?

HutchK

Recently used a Mobile Broadband USB Stick in the UK, with the SMTP Server send.vodafone.net to send email. This server has worked okay during recent trips to the UK but this time emails sent were either not received at all or just to give an example, two have taken 7 weeks (send on 30 April '10) and just received yesterday (17 June '10)......not good and can't afford for this to happen again during upcoming trips!!

Can anyone please help with what the problem is and where emails are getting stuck. Is there a more reliable SMTP Server to use??

Cheers!

Hi HutchK,

Don't worry, there is an explanation.

The vodafone.net email service is being decommissioned - see the announcement here regarding this. As part of this, the send.vodafone.net SMTP server will also be going offline. This system had been in use for some time, and much like a PC, there comes a time when you need to overhaul the whole system rather than simply upgrade it.

To replace this, we developed our Vodafone 360 service, which includes an email service with it's own SMTP server. If you sign up for a free 360 account, as well as being able to use the contacts features to help integrate your various contacts lists, you can use the 360 email account and, most importantly in this case, the new SMTP server - smtp.360.com.

You just need to ensure that the email is set to use SSL and port 465, and that you enter your 360 username and password as the secure details.

Thanks for your help DaveN.

I'll be accessing email with a netbook and using my own incoming POP3 server with Outlook 2007, so will only need the outgoing SMTP server (smtp.360.com) as I'll be using a Vodafone Mobile Broadband Stick for internet access while travelling in the UK.

Will this also work when travelling in Italy? What is the most cost effective approach and will I need to set up another free account with a different SMTP server in Italy?

Hi HutchK

There's no need to change anything over when you are in Italy, you can continue to use smtp.360.com, and it will work just fine.

Charges are per standard roaming data charges.

I hope this helps clarify matters for you.
