If you can make calls, the phone must be unlocked and working on the network. I therefore don't think it's a hardware or SIM issue specifically, but a matter of getting the correct message centre number. This should be reading off the SIM card, but you should also be able to enter it manually, though I don't know whether the SIM will then over-write that. The fact that it's blank (apparently) is, I'm pretty sure, the core of the problem. It'll be interesting to see what happens when you get home and re-connect to the UK network. It won't help your current problem, but it'll still be interesting!
Locking (in this context) refers to network locking, which means that your phone only works with the network that supplied it. It most commonly applies to PAYG phones where there's an element of price subsidy which is clawed back by usage. You can get phones unlocked by asking for a code (the NUC), which you may have to pay for. But it sounds as though yours isn't locked if you can make calls.

I did wonder whether the fact that the message centre number wasn't displaying only meant that it wasn't displayed, though it would still be handy to be able to see it!
