I purchased the handset on March 5 having had a software failure on my Huawei. It worked fine in UK but on arriving in Australia I was unable to reply to texts received, or to send texts. I was able to talk to Australian phones but not text. Vodafone AU says the phone is not compatible with their network. I spent over $50 calling Vodafone UK customer services on a new payg sim because mine said outgoing calls were barred although my onine account settings did not show this. Customer services checked with technical and they found, amongst other things that overseas calls were blocked although customer services could not see this. They made adjustments and instructed me to manually connect to another network and then to reset auto connect as my sim had not updated since arrival in Australia March 8. They said the sim should update alterations within 24 hours. But, of course, I can't connect to Vodafone UK to implement! The upshot is that no matter who I talk to I am unable to send text to anywhere, always getting the message "unable to send" But, I have just discovered, have been charged 75p every time I have tried!!!

Thanks for all your suggestions, it's appreciated. I've been on line to Motorola and they feel it is a network issue - not much help there either.
Thanks for the links, have looked and taken on board. Don't really understand about phone locking, but I'm fairly sure mine is unlocked because in the course of my attempts to rectify the problem I used another network, YES OPTUS, which worked fine on wifi but still wouldn't send text.
When I bought the handset,my sim from the Huewei was standard size and the Vodafone shop transferred details onto a micro sim. Could there have been a transfer glitch?

If you can make calls, the phone must be unlocked and working on the network.  I therefore don't think it's a hardware or SIM issue specifically, but a matter of getting the correct message centre number.  This should be reading off the SIM card, but you should also be able to enter it manually, though I don't know whether the SIM will then over-write that.  The fact that it's blank (apparently) is, I'm pretty sure, the core of the problem.   It'll be interesting to see what happens when you get home and re-connect to the UK network.  It won't help your current problem, but it'll still be interesting!

Locking (in this context) refers to network locking, which means that your phone only works with the network that supplied it.  It most commonly applies to PAYG phones where there's an element of price subsidy which is clawed back by usage.  You can get phones unlocked by asking for a code (the NUC), which you may have to pay for.  But it sounds as though yours isn't locked if you can make calls.

Thank you Hrym, that all makes sense. Interestingly, Motorolla got back to me asking how I managed to change the message centre number! They then suggested that I try again with Vodafone UK number and not to worry if the entry went blank after updating. It way well be that this is the area with problems given that whatever is entered will not be there next time one looks to check. I'm due back in the UK April 8 so will post update at that time if the handset returns to proper proper function. Perhaps there is a reason why Vodafone AU say the Moto G is not compatible with their network...........

I did wonder whether the fact that the message centre number wasn't displaying only meant that it wasn't displayed, though it would still be handy to be able to see it!
